Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Your editor and the elves were delighted to learn from Dr. Greg Schmidt (a.k.a. Mr. Summerfest) that this year's Summerfest Parade Grand Marshall is none other than long time Croton resident John Giglio (click on the photo from a 2009 village veterans ceremony.)

Giglio's roots in the village go way back and his commitment as a volunteer and much more to Croton--FROM THE RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY--needs no elaboration...BUT we'll let these links do some of the talking:

(ALMOST) GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: THE PLAYER PIANO

Continuing our popular series--GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.... and so without further ah-doo....THE PLAYER PIANO!

A player piano (also known as pianola) is a self-playing piano, containing a pneumatic or electro-mechanical mechanism that operates the piano action via pre-programmed music recorded on perforated paper, or in rare instances, metallic rolls, with more modern implementations using MIDI. (CLICK ON THE CIRCA 1905 AD FROM THE WILSON PIANO COMPANY). The rise of the player piano grew with the rise of the mass-produced piano for the home in the late 19th and early 20th century Sales peaked in 1924, then declined as the improvement in phonograph recordings due to electrical recording methods developed in the mid-1920s. The advent of electrical amplification in home music reproduction via radio in the same period helped cause their eventual decline in popularity, and the stock market crash of 1929 virtually wiped out production. UNIT CITATION, WESTCHESTER REGIONAL EMS COUNCIL AWARDS CEREMONY, CROTON

At the May 17th annual Westchester Regional EMS Council Awards Ceremony, several members of the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department received a “Unit Citation” for their actions taken to assist Croton On Hudson Emergency Medical Services and Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps at a medical emergency last August. FOR COLLECTORS OF EDITIONS O.P. VINTAGE POSTCARDS

NEW FROM OUR FRIENDS AT EFSP--For Collectors of EDITIONS O.P. POSTCARDS--(Click in the photo to see a very young Simone Signoret.)

French publisher Editions O.P., based in Paris, published postcards in two formats, as you can see below. The bigger formats were probably published before and during the war. After the war O.P. started counting again with the smaller formats. Most of the O.P. postcards were in black and white, but for this post we chose 15 hand-coloured gems.  read and see much more here.

TAX SCHEME PLACES RESIDENTS AT RISK, A MUST-READ LETTER

“When our state and local officials encourage residents to break the law to make a political statement, that is not acceptable.”

The following letter was published in this week’s issue of the Gazette.

To the Editor:

Political activism is an American tradition as old as the founding of our nation. But there is a big difference between personal activism and a municipal corporation engaging in activism which places its residents at risk.

When our Village trustees pass activist resolutions and send letters of protest to Albany or Washington, such action is harmless, albeit ineffectual. When we participate in a “Hey hey, ho ho, [insert cause] has got to go” march, we are getting some exercise and our neighbors are no worse off.

But when our state and local officials encourage residents to break the law to make a political statement, that is not acceptable.

ABOUT THAT TAX WORK-AROUND, CROTON BEWARE, THE IRS BURSTS CUOMO'S TAX ILLUSION

BOTTOM LINE--Democrats Knock it off--Try voting differently---WALL STREET JOURNAL The Editorial Board -May 23, 2018 6:21 p.m. ET.....On Wednesday the Treasury Department put out a notice that “informs taxpayers” that the Internal Revenue Service intends to promulgate regulations on the tax treatment of “certain payments made by taxpayers” that count as a “credit” against state and local taxes....The reference is to schemes cooked up by innovative minds in places such as the California state legislature. Democrats are trying to set up a “California Excellence Fund” so that taxpayers can claim donations to the fund as a credit against state tax liability...the IRS message is: Knock it off. The message is also a warning to taxpayers that they shouldn’t count on this or other gimmicks to reduce their tax burden. They should try voting for state and local politicians who won’t drive them out of the state.
