A Justice Department investigation has concluded the FBI committed a "grave failure" when its Richmond, Virginia, field office produced an intelligence memo linking some traditionalist Catholics with domestic violent extremism.

The report found agents relied on sweeping generalizations despite uncovering little evidence supporting a broader connection.

Late last week the Justice Department's Weaponization Working Group released the report after it probed the 2023 "Richmond Memo," which triggered outrage among Catholics, religious-liberty advocates, and members of Congress after it was leaked publicly.
