Help Report Hemlock Woolly Adelgid
You can help protect New York’s forests while you hike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski. It’s easy—all you have to do is keep an eye out for and report invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)! This forest pest kills hemlock trees in the eastern United States. HWA is tiny, so infestations are best identified by the white, woolly masses the insects create at the base of the needles on infested hemlock trees. If you believe you have found HWA in a town where it is not yet known to be (see map of current location reports), report using the IMapInvasives tool. Report HWA in a new location
Additionally, you can email a report and photos to DEC Forest Health at foresthealth@dec.ny.gov. Photos are critical for helping us identify if it is HWA. Take pictures of the infestation signs as described above (include something for scale such as a coin or ruler). Note the location (intersecting roads, landmarks or GPS coordinates). For other ways to report and to learn more about HWA, visit the DEC webpage.
