--A reader has many fond memories of THOSE SYRUPY FILLED WAX BOTTLES TOO, also known as NIK-L-NIPS!  Their history is tied to the development of paraffin wax, a byproduct of the petroleum industry. Paraffin wax became popular for creating novelty candies due to its smooth texture and malleability. They have some of the most amazing vintage Easter items...like this 1974 LEAF'S EASTER CANDY BROCHURE; very quintessentially 1970's; lots of chocolate bunnies and such--see it here.
