A TRIBUTE TO TED ALTHOF

As many of you know, Ted Althof (a.k.a. Papa Ted) passed away late last year; (http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2012/10/papa-ted-health-update.html). Considered by collectors to be the leading authority on Putz houses, his loss was keenly felt by friends, family and members of the collecting community.

A Tribute to Ted has been posted:

"When Ted passed away in October, 2012, several putz house collectors were trying to decide what would be the most appropriate way to memorialize Ted’s work.  Eventually, the idea of a putz (early-to-mid-1900s Christmas) village was accepted...".  You can see that tribute here: http://cardboardchristmas.com/html/putz_tribute_to__ted.html

VINTAGE WORLD: SPECIAL THANKS AS ALWAYS TO PAUL RACE & HOWARD LAMEY

We're always amazed at the generosity of Paul Race (bigindoortrains.com and familychristmasonline.com) and putz artisan Howard Lamey (littleglitterhouses.com)--both of whom have assembled a wealth of info, free patterns, inspiration and more on the subject we love best--collecting--and making putz houses--and of course, CHRISTMAS, traditions, and trains! (Mustn't forget Race's cardboardchristmas.com either! The forums alone require ALOT of work!)

And it's not just about Christmas...but keeping holiday traditions in general alive and well--and yes yes, keeping Christmas well of course...all year long.

Now for those of us who aren't skilled enough to construct houses with multiple levels, balconies and dormers, a little project that's as easy as can be. Howard's vintage-inspired "Chickie Shack"--perfect for Easter and wonderfully simple. Adaptable too (just add a ramp) for sheep shacks (lol!)

DJ Favale Chain of Croton-on-Hudson, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the age of 59.

DJ was born on June 24, 1953 to Adolfo Bruno Favale and Mary Elizabeth Wright in Tokyo, Japan. 

DJ is survived by her best friend and husband, Paul Chain and their daughters, Zoe Barbara Chain and Samantha Jean Chain. DJ is also survived by three sisters, Maggie Favale, Mary Favale, Georgett Styers and her nieces Jacque Pickrell and Maryjo Januski. DJ was predeceased by her mother, father and her sister, Barbara Pickrell.

DJ Chain Memorial Project-FRIENDS AND FAMILY-The Chain family will be working with Wave Hill Public Gardens and Cultural Center to restore its main garden, The Flower Garden, in DJ's name.

NEWS FROM OUR SAVIOUR LUTHERAN CHURCH: Pastor Anthony Stephens will be leaving for a week of training at Fort Benning, GA on March 15, 2013. After training he heads for Kandahar, Afghanistan to fill a vacated post as battalion chaplain for 101st Expeditionary Signal Battalion.The 101st Expeditionary Signal Battalion deployed to Afghanistan in Fall 2012 to provide communications support to military units across that country using Information Network-Tactical system that Employs satellite technology to provide voice and data connections to military units. The battalion’s mission is to provide “signal assurance.” The 101st is garrisoned in Yonkers, New York. The expected end of deployment for 101st ESB is late May, early June, 2013, based upon current Army policy. Pastor John Backe will serve in the interim. MORE BULKHEAD PROBLEMS AT THE CROTON YACHT CLUB 3/2/13

In our walk on the riverfront today, we were startled to see that the bulkhead walkway has now been completely cordoned off, but more than this, that sections of the walkway immediately adjacent to the Croton Yacht Club building itself are suddenly upended/or sunken for lack of another way to put it. Best to let the photos below do the talking. One assumes the village is aware of the situation but these photos will be sent anyway.

LIGHTING FINALLY RETURNS TO THE UPPER VILLAGE BUSINESS DISTRICT

After many months in near darkness, the re-furbished lamp posts are finally returning to Croton's Upper Village business district slowly but surely. It can't happen quick enough for us.

Said one business owner, "too late to save the 2012 Christmas shopping season, let's hope they're ALL reinstalled soon".
