New York lawmakers are weighing two controversial parole bills that supporters say would bring fairness to the state’s parole system, while critics maintain the proposals would make it easier for violent offenders – including serial killers – to seek release.

The Elder Parole bill would make incarcerated people eligible for a parole hearing once they reach 55 years old and have served at least 15 years of their sentence. State Sen. Cordell Cleare (D-Manhattan) and Assembly Member Maritza Davila (D-Brooklyn) are the bill’s sponsors.
