FROM THE MAILBOX...

A reader asks: How come no barbecue here?

Response: The reader must be a new resident. Croton has had assorted BBQ places here over the years---the operative word is "had".

HERE ARE TWO:

One of these was Holy Smoke (their Croton restaurant was near Super Foodtown); they celebrated their 15th anniversary in 2019, sold out for one of their authentic German OKTOBERFESTS IN 2019, closing in November 2021. HOWEVER PLEASE NOTE--THE MAHOPAC LOCATION IS STILL HERE!

They ARE known for their brisket, baby back ribs, wings and cornbread---and have received assorted area awards. Their Oktoberfests were amazing....and may still be.  It's been a few years since many of us have ventured in that direction.

AGAIN, their Mahopac location is still going strong--but call ahead as they are often booked solid - 241 Route 6N, Mahopac, NY 10541Mahopac

and

MEMPHIS MAE'S--they were located in the Croton Commons--loved this place--our household was there at least twice a month---they had amazing Cole Slaw, brisket, fab Fat Tuesday events, and superb chili.  In addition, Memphis Mae's played host to many community events and was an active supporter of many charitable endeavors.  (See here for one of many examples

Alas:

GOOGLE AI---Memphis Mae's BBQ Bistro in Croton-on-Hudson closed in early 2019, shortly after the owner put the 13-year-old restaurant up for sale in mid-2018.

Closure Details: Location: 173 South Riverside Avenue, Croton-on-Hudson, NY

Timeframe: Put on the market in May 2018 due to rising minimum wage pressures and shifting local dining trends, and permanently closed by spring 2019.
