AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR, VILLAGE BOARD AND VILLAGE MANAGER FROM JESSICA DIECKMAN

An open letter to the Mayor, Village Board and Village Manager,

As you know this year marks America’s 250th birthday. Croton has a very rich and deep history in the Revolutionary War that’s critical to the development and growth of America. Yet our village has zero signs celebrating this Revolutionary War history, and we don’t have any banners celebrating America’s 250th birthday.

This is unlike all the other towns around us, who have proudly hung banners and flags to celebrate their Revolutionary War history for residents and visitors alike to appreciate.

Here in Croton we are quick to watch the village raise a pride flag and name part of a street after a Communist activist but we see the village ignoring America’s birthday. Without that there would be no pride flags or communist activists. There would be no freedom of speech.

We should immediately address this discrepancy and get banners up, and put up historical signs touting things like George Washington staying in Van Cortlandt Manor during and after the Revolutionary War and using it as key station for safety during the war. We should have signs about how patriots living in Croton spotted the British ship The Vulture and armed up and immediately took action to fight against them. The village does have a website page about this.

Regardless, does the village plan to acknowledge and celebrate America’s 250th birthday this year and if so, how? Where will the decorations and historical signs go?

Please see photos attached from other towns showing their decorations.

I really hate to see Croton on Hudson miss out on this historical opportunity to showcase our place in the creation of America.

For an excellent book about the Revolutionary War. I highly recommend 1776 by well known historian David McCullough.

Sincerely,
Jessica Dieckman
