October 2025 is bringing a rare celestial treat: two comets—C/2025 R2 (SWAN) and C/2025 A6 (Lemmon)—will be visible in the night sky, especially around October 20–21.
What to Know About the Comets
Comet SWAN will make its closest approach to Earth on October 20, coming within 24 million miles.
Comet Lemmon follows on October 21, passing at about 55 million miles away.
Both comets are expected to reach a brightness of magnitude +6.1, which is just beyond naked-eye visibility—but they may be visible without equipment in dark, moonless skies.
How to See Them
Best time: About 45 minutes after sunset
Direction: Look low in the western and southern skies
Tools: Binoculars will help, especially in areas with light pollution
Location: Northern Hemisphere viewers, including New York, are well-positioned to catch the show
