Next: NY POST/DEC Most plastic bags will be verboten in New York after March 1 — but enforcement of the ban will not be immediate amid complaints of a paper bag shortage. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation this week acknowledged that retailers may not have had enough time to vanquish plastic from their stores, including a switchover to paper bags. As a result, they plan to let retailers continue to use synthetic bags without repercussions after the March 1 deadline goes into effect — until further notice. “Enforcement will follow in the months ahead,” said DEC Chief of Staff Sean Mahar, in a WAMC radio interview on Tuesday. 1. I have no intentions of using smelly reusable bags that I have to wash. How that helps the environment when I have to use soap, water and energy is beyond me. The fact that you are actually told to wash them tells you there is a problem! We went to the restaurant supply store in my mom's old neighborhood and bought a few gross. I also knew that the New York Times was absolutely going to be exempt, lol!

    1. Two of my neighbors get their newspaper delivered; the newspapers are often double-bagged and---in periods of inclement weather--they are triple and quadruple-bagged. Because many of us re-use these bags for assorted reasons, we are often given 60-120 a month. Not a criticism. Just an observation and a fact.
