Holtec’s Indian Point Proposal Draws Community Scrutiny

By Abby Luby

A Zoom rally last week protested a proposed new nuclear-powered data center at Indian Point. Some 279 people from across Westchester and surrounding counties tuned in to hear speakers oppose the plan.

The proposal comes from Indian Point owner Holtec International, which has been decommissioning the three-unit plant since 2021. In a July 31, 2025, announcement, Holtec said the company “retains the existing nuclear licenses at its decommissioned facilities, which may enable future deployment of our Small Modular Reactor, the SMR-300.”

There has been a nationwide push to build new or restart shuttered nuclear power plants to meet growing energy demand and curb rising electricity costs. Some see nuclear power as a viable alternative to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, whose development was hindered or halted under the Trump administration. The high demand for electricity is also driven by newly built mega data centers.

In June, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the state’s nuclear power initiative, directing the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to build at least one megawatt of nuclear capacity. Hochul said nuclear plants would only be sited in communities that “want it.”

Hochul also proposed a one-million-square-foot, 200-megawatt, hyper-scale data center for artificial intelligence at Indian Point, located in the Town of Cortlandt. More at Holtec’s Indian Point Proposal Draws Community Scrutiny | The Examiner News
