IT'S LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY

Here at the Everything Croton blog, we're crazy about Lincoln....click on the photo and links.

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, was born on February 12, 1809. He has become known as one of the greatest American presidents of all time.

At the time of his death, in 1865, many saw him as a martyr, and it wasn't too long afterward that his birthday began being observed informally. In the mid-1870s, Julius Francis of Buffalo, New York, began honoring Lincoln on his birthday and petitioned Congress to make the day a legal holiday. (It is observed as a state holiday in some.) ---From 2020 and John G. Testa: Congratulations to the Lincoln Society in Peekskill for another excellent Annual Lincoln Remembrance Day. The Lincoln Depot Museum was proud to once again be the location for the reenactment of the 1861 Lincoln Speech given by President-elect Lincoln to the citizens of Peekskill and surrounding area. The only stop he made in Westchester on his Inaugural Journey from his home in Springfield to Washington DC. The weather was perfect for the Wreath Ceremony at the Lincoln Exedra on South Street and the march down to the Depot. Michael Macedonia did another wonderful reenactment as President-elect Lincoln. While portraying general Gouverneur K. Warren, local living history historian Rob Buccheri then made an outstanding presentation highlighting local connections to Lincoln and the Civil War. Special thanks to the members of the 5th NY DuryĆ©e Zouaves for participating in the event. SEE THE FLICKR PHOTO ALBUM AT https://www.flickr.com/photos/jgtesta22/sets/72157713228063262/
