CORONAVIRUS UPDATE 4/7 FROM THE VILLAGE--TEMPORARY BAN OF LEAF BLOWERS ETC.

Leaf Blower Use Banned in Village Effective April 8th--The Village Manager has issued an executive order effective April 8, 2020, to ban the use of leaf blowers of any kind within the boundaries of the Village. Residents are requested to inform their landscapers of this temporary ban. The Village will also be reaching out to area landscapers to let them know.  READ MORE AT https://www.crotononhudson-ny.gov/home/news/coronavirus-covid-19-update-april-7-2020

Editor's note: A nearby town has enacted a similar "temporary" ban; some landscapers there have already informed their customers that since clean-up will take longer, home-owners can expect to pay twenty to thirty percent more.  Whether that will be the case here remains to be seen.

5:56 PM--VILLAGE HAS SENT OUT THIS CLARIFICATION: Explanation of Ban on Leaf Blower Use On March 16, 2020, the Village Manager executed a State of Emergency in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. At the April 6th Regular Board Meeting, the Village Board discussed banning leaf blowers under the Manager’s state of emergency. There is concern that the use of leaf blowers may be contributing to the spread of the virus although there is no scientific proof of this. There is also the issue of the excessive noise during a time that most residents are having to work from home. For these reasons, an Order Controlling Use of Equipment and approved by the New York State Department of Health has been issued.

4/14 UPDATED; REQUESTED THAT THE VILLAGE LIFT BAN IN LIGHT OF THE 4/13 STORM: Update to Village's Leaf Blower Emergency Order--On April 7th, the Village Manager, at the direction of the Village Board of Trustees, issued an emergency order to ban the use of leaf blowers of any kind within the boundaries of the Village. Due to yesterday's storm, the emergency order has been updated to allow the use of leaf blowers between the hours of 11 AM and 6 PM beginning today, April 14, 2020, through Sunday, April 19, 2020. Thank you for your cooperation and be safe.

  1. I don't understand this rule. If one person is using a leaf blower, what's the issue?

    1. Apparently there is a belief that this will blow the virus around. There is quite a bit of debate about whether or not this will have any effect on transmission---with people now going so far as warning residents not to open their windows on windy days....and insisting that the government issue "Wind Virus Alerts".....no joke.......whatever at this stage. Landscapers and homeowners need to know about this new "temporary rule", although what penalties and enforcement shall occur is not clear----landscaper customers also need to be aware that they will now--in all likelihood--have to pay additional fees for services.
