MORE FROM THE EVERYTHING CROTON MAILBOX.......
Q: We moved here and are disappointed there isn't more for children in the way of free entertainment or stores for children and healthy eating options. What are the plans that village government has to improve this?
A: Wow. Sorry you are disappointed. You've moved to Croton-on-Hudson, a small village that was recently cited as one of the safest communities in NYS (read more courtesy of Croton United here http://tiny.cc/h9ucmy) and with one of the finest area school districts (croton-harmonschools.org) It appears, however, that these things did not factor into your decision to move here.
But I digress..."Village government" consistently provides much in the way of "free entertainment" for children, as does the Croton Library--year round. Croton is also home to numerous parks and playgrounds. (Please consult the village and library websites for additional information.)
Croton has had "stores for children"---clothing, toys, hobby--all have failed in recent years. Among the reasons cited by the owners of these stores were a lack of community support, online shopping etc. That being said, you are certainly "free" to open the kind of businesses you believe will succeed here.
As for "healthy" eating options, we have been down this road before. Read more here http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2017/05/from-everything-croton-mailbox.html
And if all this isn't enough to quell your "disappointment": Here's a wrap up of Croton's businesses that made BEST OF WESTCHESTER 2017/Westchester Magazine, courtesy of Croton United https://www.facebook.com/crotonunited/photos/a.315869625236742.1073741828.315297801960591/819258358231197/?type=3&fref=mentions

AND NOW...MORE EVENING FREE PARKING IN UPPER VILLAGE
Courtesy of the Croton United FB page: The
popularity of the dining options in the Upper Village has caused some
changes designed to increase the spots available for evening customers.
The middle section of the Vassallo (Merwyn Oak) lot will now be free parking after 6pm on weekdays and free 2 hour parking all day Saturday. Because there is less need for employee parking after 6, there should still be sufficient spaces for holders of employee permits.
Mayor Schmidt is glad that the change is necessary: “We were getting feedback that there were not enough public spaces since more people are coming to eat in the evening. READ MORE HERE http://bit.ly/2wuo5qD

The crown jewel of the Croton parks is the Croton Arboretum. Named in honor of Jayne Lytle, the 20 acre preserve has been maintained by neighborhood volunteers since being donated to the Village in 1991.
Deputy Mayor Bob Anderson serves as Trustee Liaison to the Village Parks Committee, and is a frequent visitor. “The Arboretum exists because of the dedication of several generations of current and former Croton residents” he says. “Current chair Karen Jescavage Bernard continues the tradition of leadership, and the donations made to the not-for-profit Croton Arboretum and Sanctuary enable preservation of these wetlands.” READ AND SEE MUCH MORE HERE https://www.facebook.com/crotonunited/posts/845763922247307

REMEMBERING LAUREN BACALL
Who died this date in 2014. Read and see more here http://bit.ly/2jiQNUL
We loved her in the 1953 romantic comedy HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE, also starring Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable. Bacall was a very beautiful, multi-talented, and polished actress.

MORE FROM THE EVERYTHING CROTON MAILBOX
Q: I went to the new Gouveia Park and it's not for the faint of heart. There are way too many dips in the trails, up and down too much, and some parts are downright dangerous. Sorry but I'm not impressed and I think the schools would have rather had the annual twenty grand in school taxes the rest of us will be making it up for. Which brings me to why can't we use the house?
A: The house has real issues; it must also be made ADA compliant. The deck is also unsafe. These items will require hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix. We have already seen that the cost for the new road was grossly underestimated by park proponents (previous administration estimated $12,000 for the new road and parking--the actual cost was well in excess of $200,000 instead.) It remains to be seen how this situation will play out in terms of cost. You should address any safety or additional concerns to the board.

Q: We're new in town and are disappointed that there are not more international food options. Can't the village force new businesses to have more variety?
A: Wow. You're joking right? No the village can't force more culinary "variety". Here's what Croton DOES have:
Croton has pizza, delis, Chinese food, Indian, Korean, Italian, Peruvian, Mexican, Latin Fusion, BBQ, Seafood, Japanese, Pub/Bistro, and an All-American diner. We have not one but TWO bakeries--BAKED BY SUSAN AND THE DESSERTIST, both of which made the BEST OF WESTCHESTER LIST 2017---and a donut franchise, HOT DIPPITY DONUTS--that's on the list too (see all of Croton's businesses that made BEST OF WESTCHESTER 2017 here, courtesy of the Croton United FB page http://bit.ly/2w8D8mr)
There are local farmers markets everywhere.
We also have prepared specialty foods at A&S http://aandsfoods.com/
Vegan and gluten-free options are available too http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2017/05/for-vegan-devotees-those-who-are-gluten.html
And once again: It takes courage to open a business anywhere including Croton. Let's stop wishing for more when we have so much--AND SUPPORT WHAT WE HAVE--or in the alternative, residents are always free to open the kind of businesses they want.
And...we're also one of the safest communities in NYS--thanks Croton United for posting http://tiny.cc/h9ucmy

SERVICE INFO FOR IRIS (NEE GRAVES) STEVENS D'ALVIA
Long time Croton resident, Iris (nee Graves) Stevens D'Alvia, has died.
Your editor first knew Iris through the local political scene and soon after, through our mutual love of animals. Iris often said that that she wanted to be remembered as the kind of person who never hesitated to confront party wrongdoing despite the consequences but more importantly, as someone who never turned her back on an animal in need. We met regularly at a friend's house for doggy play dates with her beloved Bo-bo (http://bit.ly/2vdrLup) and occasionally with the more spirited Gillie. Click on the photo to see Iris at the St. Augustine June festival in 2013.

Carter funeral home website: Iris (nee Graves) Stevens D'Alvia, died at home, in Croton on Hudson, New York on the evening of August 5th, 2017 at the age of 77, in the arms of her daughters, surrounded by her pets. A graduate of Syracuse University in 1962, she moved to New York City where she began a career as an educator and publishing associate. In 1971, she returned home to Upper Westchester for good....Read the complete obituary here: http://bit.ly/2wlHBD0
