RECOMMENDED READING: NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN, A BIOGRAPHY OF DIRK BEREND BOONSTRA

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

A few weeks ago we ran an Everything Croton Spotlight on Piet Boonstra (Think you know Piet Boonstra, President of The Croton Historical Society? Think again! See http://bit.ly/1eLqDNZ)

And so here we are again--recommending that you read his excellent book, NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN, A BIOGRAPHY OF DIRK BEREND BOONSTRA: A poignant WWII biography told mainly through 60+ very personal letters home. Dirk first served as a tail gunner in a TBF torpedo bomber, operating off of the carrier USS Sangamon during the North African invasion. He received a Presidential Unit Citation for "extraordinary heroism in action" there. Later in the Pacific, aboard the carrier USS Princeton, and also on the tiny island of Munda in the central Solomon Islands, where Pappy Boyington's Black Sheep Squadron was also based, he saw heavy action as a tail gunner in SBD dive-bombers. Dirk was killed in 1943 in a tragic plane crash while returning from R&R in Sydney.
