INEZ MILHOLLAND: BEAUTIFUL SUFFRAGIST ON A WHITE CHARGER - CHRONICLES OF CROTON'S BOHEMIA - On March 3, 1913, a statuesque woman clad in a flowing white cape and riding a white horse was the leader of a giant women's suffrage parade down Washington’s Pennsylvania Avenue.

She carried a streaming banner reading, "Forward into light."  

Not quite 27 years old, Inez Milholland already had an impressive record of accomplishments.

JOURNAL NEWS, 2013 PEREZ-A-PALOOZA RAISES $8,255 FOR THE CROTON CARING COMMITTEE

JOURNAL NEWS ARTICLE, ROBERT MARCHANT, PEREZ-A-PALOOZA, highlights only:

--C-H School District recently hosted its second annual “Perez-A-Palooza,” a benefit variety show consisting of various musical and dance performances and comedy acts performed by the district’s faculty and staff members.
--The first Perez-A-Palooza was held in January 2012 to pay tribute to Fran Perez, a beloved member of the Croton-Harmon district who worked at Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School as an aide for many years before passing away from cancer...This is the second year the fundraiser brought faculty, staff and school community members together, this time to raise funds for the Croton Caring Committee, bringing in a total of $8,255 for the organization.

ANOTHER LOOK AT THE GLORIOUS MAIN WINDOW OF ASBURY METHODIST CHURCH

We've talked about the stunning grand window on the main facade of Croton's Asbury United Methodist Church before, but recently had an opportunity to photograph it again during their 2013 Arts & Hearts Valentine Crafts Fair. 

Composed of well over a dozen individual "segments" and original to the church, the window underwent restoration work a few years ago. It really is quite spectacular. Click on the photo. THE CROTON CONNECTION, DORIS STEVENS: MORE CHRONICLES OF CROTON'S BOHEMIA FROM CROTON'S OWN ROBERT SCOTT

Robert Scott's "Chronicles of Croton's Bohemia" continues with a look at Doris Stevens, Jailed for Freedom: 

A militant feminist and leader in the women's suffrage movement, Doris Stevens was a keen eyewitness to the historic events that led up to the passage of the 19th Amendment. 

While the experiences were still fresh in her mind, she recorded them. 

Her 1920 book, Jailed for Freedom, captures in minute detail the cruelties suffragists endured during the fight to achieve the vote.  
  
More than 500 women were arrested during the demonstrations. Her book performs an invaluable service by recording in an appendix the names of the 168 women who actually served prison sentences, with a brief biography of each. CRYSTAL EASTMAN, PARTS 1 & 2 

--BRAINS AND BEAUTY: Crystal Eastman was a pioneering feminist, an influential labor lawyer, a founder of the Woman’s Peace Party and the American Civil Liberties Union, a co-founder and co-editor of The Liberator, and one of the most beloved women of her generation.

--GONE TOO SOON: Crystal Eastman was “a natural leader,” recalled Roger Baldwin, a founder of the ACLU, with whom she had many differences.

Lillian Nordica: Unlucky in Love 

As streets go in that part of Croton still called Harmon by some, Nordica Drive is unremarkable. Another quiet bucolic byway, ending in a dead end--as many do in this former real estate development.

The Making of a Prima Donna - The Lillian Nordica story is a study in fortitude. It begins with her mother, Amanda Norton. “Give me a spoon,” she once said, “and I won’t hesitate to dig a tunnel through a mountain.” Amanda imparted this determination to her daughters. We met a very interesting crafting "family" at the fair..."Monay" and Mom...of MoNay's Closet - jewelry designs molded from laces and other bits--using the lost wax casting method--very delicate in appearance, the photo below does not do the execution justice--as well as these very cool silver/copper merged pieces--also at the table were these cute little bunnies that act like a modern day "security blanket" for the child whose mom has to work, run errands, etc.---with a little pocket for putting messages in on the backside--it gets left behind when Mom has to go. SOME PHOTOS FROM TODAY'S 2013 EAGLEFEST

We popped over to Teatown's Eaglefest 2013 Headquarters at Croton Point Park this morning. Despite Friday's snowstorm, the parking lot and paths were cleared and everyone was ready and raring to go...kudos to all the staff and volunteers, including Croton's EMS there in case of emergency....Then we were off to all the listed Eagle viewing sights up and down the river. By far the BEST spots, at least between 10 and 11 am, were at the Verplank waterfront and Georges Island; in total we saw 13 eagles, 8 immature, 5 mature...a great way to spend the morning.
