A letter from The Gazette and Mark Franzoso...

To the editor:

I strongly disagree with Andy Simmons’ letter to the editor this past week. I also wonder why this new board member was chosen to deliver the message: “Welcome to Croton! Here’s our truck washing station, gas station, piles of dirt and debris.” How can the board of trustees be happy with this? Relocating the DPW garage out of town was a blunder in itself, but it has now grown to become a taxpayer catastrophe.

The importance of beautifying our gateways have been the subject of many meetings over the years with Ann Galelli as the head of the planning board. Now we are told one of these entrances will be a second DPW yard. That's outrageous and unacceptable! 

 In a democracy (a system of government in which citizens vote directly in or elect representatives to form a governing body), the quality, competence and integrity of the individuals who serve the public determine the quality of life. In Croton, you would think the servant with the most power would be the Village Manager, unfortunately, it’s not. I sounded the alarm more than two years ago when the village wanted to buy a building and adjacent land in the Town of Cortland in order to relocate the DPW garage, which is a tad less than 4 miles away from our biggest asset, the parking lot. For such a large taxpayer expense, there should have been a consultant hired to assess the DPW's needs, and to see if the new location would be viable. Instead, the village board decided to rely on the recommendation of the DPW head, Frank Babli, who doesn't live in our village and had just been recently hired! Maybe you can hide bad decisions in a city the size of Yonkers, but not here in Croton. I urge everyone to read the weekly agenda’s. This fiasco all in, looks like a 7 million burden, with another 5 million on the way to renovate the municipal building. 

Richard Oliver’s letter to the editor from May 30 is out of touch. If you would like more, younger adults between the ages of 24 and 44 to move to our village, then support smart sense spending and find a way to make Croton affordable. This town cannot survive if the folks elected continue to spend money foolishly. 

 As Richard Masur asked twice in letters to the editor recently (in support of the current administration), ‘why the arrogance?’ Well Richard I’ll be happy to answer with one word - INCOMPETENCE. A very nice try at a sell job to the taxpayers, but in truth this administration can’t be blamed, they are just making a bad situation worse and there’s no coming back!

Floris (1969) was the screen debut of Rutger Hauer, but it also jump-started the careers of director Paul Verhoeven and scriptwriter Gerard Soeteman. With many details, fan Kooimans describes how it all began.

They're followed by a great 1953 ad for the classic sci-fi movie, INVADERS FROM MARS!  And a 1926 ad--proclaiming a Merry Christmas from Joyzelle. 

For those who don't know,  Joyzelle Joyner (August 27, 1905 – November 30, 1980) was an American actress and dancer. She appeared in at least thirty films between 1925 and 1935, garnering some notoriety for her appearance in The Sign of the Cross.   Again, click on the photos and links.

The New York State Health and Environmental Conservation departments recently launched a website that allows New Yorkers who use a public drinking water system to check the quality of their water. The website water.ny.gov makes the reports done on your water easily accessible, sharing information on the water’s source, how many people the water system serves, and possible contaminants.

Many thanks to Pete Oehmen for another great set of photos from the Golden Glow of Christmas Past Convention 2019--some examples of figural (and more) vintage/antique lighting that were on exhibit. The first photo shows some gorgeous figurals made by Kremenezky of Hungary (spelling varies).   Here's a little about the company---By 1909 fancy figural Christmas light bulbs were being produced in Austria to market in Europe and America. The finely crafted hand-painted bulbs, from the Kremenetsky Electric Company and other factories, were made to represent animals, birds, flowers, fruits and even vegetables.  Read more about figural Christmas bulbs at ...2021 UPDATE: LINK IS NO LONGER ACTIVE.

Many of these photos have been sliced and diced into close-ups so you can appreciate their beauty.  There will be more. 

p.s. Some of these bulbs do still work--(people run them on dimmers), but the vast majority are displayed as ornaments.

THE WEEK BEGAN AT NOONE---The workweek began with a continuation of the oppressive heat we experienced all weekend but it all ended on Tuesday. There was a big drop in the temperature and a great drop in the humidity. It was appreciated especially since we would be outdoors on Tuesday night. 

Our township has several free concerts each summer and we look forward to combing the list when it gets published each year. The lists of shows that interest us seems to become shorter each year. In recent years, the season's lineup has become dominated by cover bands and we just don't get that excited about seeing cover bands. What did excite us is that Peter Noone would be playing again or, more specifically, as billed, Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone. DAYTON SHOOTER'S DELETED TWITTER ACCOUNT TELLS A VERY DIFFERENT STORY THAN LOCAL NARRATIVES AND MORE

Everything Croton has received a number of comments attempting to link the Dayton shooter, Connor Betts, to President Trump.  In our hyper politicized world, it's important to read first, react less, and then repeat....repeat...repeat...because apparently:

Amidst the disturbing trend of political conflict in the United States escalating into violence, it has been a staple of conventional wisdom that the real danger comes almost entirely from the far right. Thus, after journalist Andy Ngo was beaten up by activists from the militant left-wing “Antifascist” movement at a protest in late June, commentators such as Vox’s Zack Beauchamp cautioned against attempts to portray Antifa’s record of violent behavior as even remotely comparable to that of far-right extremists. Beauchamp quoted an Anti-Defamation League primer on Antifa which said, “To date, there have not been any known Antifa-related murders.”

But is that still true today? We don’t know if Connor Betts, the 24-year-old Ohio man who killed nine people (including his own sister) and wounded 27 more when he opened fire on a crowded street in Dayton on Sunday, had any involvement with Antifa. But Betts’s Twitter trail makes it clear that he was a hardcore leftist who embraced some fairly extreme ideas—and, in some cases, advocated violence toward political enemies in Antifa-style language.
