New York mask mandate in effect, but some counties won’t enforce it. What to know.
As New York’s mask mandate takes effect Monday, at least five counties across the state have said they will not enforce the measure, citing the lack of local resources and rising tensions between residents.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the mandate Friday, saying that spiking COVID-19 cases and hospitalization rates necessitated a stronger statewide response.
The measure — which would require masks in all indoor spaces that aren’t private residences, with the exception of those that already require proof of vaccination for entry — will be reevaluated on Jan. 15, based on the current COVID-19 conditions at the time.
