Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
THE FOLLOWING LETTER APPEARS IN THIS WEEK'S GAZETTE; IT APPEARS HERE WITH THE WRITER'S PERMISSION
To the Editor:
I was upset by Croton Democrat Party Chair Rich Masur’s letter in the October 22 through 28, 2020 edition of the Gazette. Mr. Masur wrote to complain about the theft of Biden and Harkman lawn signs. I whole heartedly agree with his displeasure over the theft of political signs on private property. However, Mr. Masur wrongly suggested the guilt of multiple Trump supporters by using the word “people” not “person for this illegal act. How does he know? No one has been arrested or identified as far as I know. One may think it might be one Trump supporter, possibly two or three, but to disparage Trump supporters, as a group of having no way to “win an election other than cheating” is unacceptable. Mr. Masur further wrote “who else would do such a small minded and unethical thing?” Does he believe all or most Croton Trump supporters are “small minded and unethical?” All politics might be local but local politics need not be vile, defamatory, and outright nasty.
Mr. Masur owes a huge apology to the almost 30% of Croton residents who voted for President Trump in 2016. I hope our fellow residents, Democrat and Republican will find a way to remember we are all neighbors with differing, but constitutionally protected points of view. This includes Biden supporters right to put any lawn sign they wish on their own property and the right of Trump supporters to not be disparaged or accused of a crime without legally binding evidence. I assume we all love our country and our village, no matter our political affiliation or our differing thoughts on how to fix our many problems.
On a side note, for the edification of Mr. Masur, I have spoken to one Village Trump supporter who has had his Trump lawn signs stolen on multiple occasions.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Whiting
you would be surprised how that thirty percent is going up this time around. your neighbors just don't talk about it.
