CONGRATULATIONS TO MARC CHESHIRE, APPOINTED CROTON VILLAGE HISTORIAN

Congratulations to Marc Cheshire, who was appointed Village Historian at last night's village board meeting.

Mr. Cheshire stated that it was a great honor to be the tenth person to serve as Village Historian. Cheshire, a 24-year Croton resident, said that his interest in local history began when he met his next door neighbor, Joyce Finnerty, who was at that time the Village Historian.  When she told him that the foundation of his house was made of stone left over from the construction of the New Croton Dam and that a Native American skeleton had once been discovered at the end of his driveway, he became fascinated by the rich history of the Croton area.

Mr. Cheshire has been on the board of Croton Friends of History since 2009 and was appointed to the newly-formed Town of Cortlandt Historic Resources Advisory Council.

In 2012 he registered the domain name crotonhistory.org and began a blog, Croton: History and Mysteries, to share his research with the community. The blog has had more than 174,000 page views.

Mr. Cheshire added that he will continue to research and write about the history of Croton and will work closely with the dedicated volunteers of the Croton Historical Society. One of our first projects will be to create a website for the historical society, as well as a Facebook page and other social media accounts.

He urged everyone who is interested in preserving and promoting our history to become a member of the Croton Historical Society.  Further details will be posted soon at crotonhistoricalsociety.org
