The following letter from CAROLYN WHITING appears in the 6/16/16 edition of  The Gazette...

To the Editor:

In last week’s Gazette, an article appeared titled 6 earn tenure in Croton-Harmon.  As reported, Croton Schools Superintendent Dr. Fuhrman welcomed the newly tenured faculty members with the following thoughts: “This is a family and people tonight are going to become permanent members of that family.”  I caution the newest members of the Croton School “family” to take such thoughts with a grain of salt.  Clearly “permanent member of the family” has a different meaning in Croton Schools than most people understand the sentiment to mean.  One extremely minor mistake, even after over fifty years of dedicated and exemplary service to the schools will result in your not being invited to continue in your position, as evidenced by the Superintendent’s and School Board’s treatment of High School Junior Varsity Basketball Coach Don Daubney.   Perhaps it would have been more accurate to have told the newest tenured faculty that “We will happily use you for as long as it suits us and then, without a shred of respect, understanding, kindness, or forgiveness, we will throw you to the curb without so much as a backward glance.”
