A BANNER JUNE MORNING IN THE HUDSON VALLEY

A banner June morning in the Hudson Valley--a visit to Black Rock Park, once a mini swimming resort, now a passive park--then the Quaker Bridge area. Built in 1894, the Quaker Bridge is one of Westchester’s oldest surviving bridges, and the 4th to be built at this location. Earlier wooden structures were washed away regularly. This bridge, built in the Pratt Truss style, is a true survivor. And finally a visit to Verplanck's Lake Meahagh. Click on the photos, all rights reserved.

AMELIA EARHART & CLIFFORD B. HARMON--Worth noting--The Harmon Trophy is a set of three international trophies, to be awarded annually to the world's outstanding aviator, aviatrix, and aeronaut.  In 1933, Amelia Earhart was one of the recipients. 

Next up---when t.v. was still in its early years--is 

Croton's own Gloria Swanson.

She appears here in a 1949 publicity blurb for the first "Buddy Rogers Show"...

Complete with pick and shovel as befits a "television pioneer".

And here's Croton's Lenore Ulric via the 1918 edition of the New York Times, selling WW1 Savings Stamps on Fifth Avenue. That's quite an ensemble she's wearing.  Ulric, discovered by Broadway playwright and producer David Belasco, starred in such popular vehicles as "Tiger Rose", "Kiki", "The Harem" and "LuLu Belle" and was particularly noted for her portrayals of the "fem fatale" hot-tempered fiery woman.

And here's Croton's Howard Da Silva in the 1962 film, David and Lisa. Directed by Frank Perry, it is based on the second story in the novel Jordi, Lisa and David by Theodore Isaac Rubin; the screenplay tells the story of a bright young man suffering from a mental illness which, among other symptoms, has instilled in him a fear of being touched. This lands him in a residential treatment center, where he meets Lisa, a similarly ill young woman who displays a split personality. Da Silva plays Dr. Swinton, the psychiatrist, Keir Dullea as David and Janet Margolin as Lisa. 

Finally, there the folk singer, songwriter and author OSCAR BRAND from The Patent Trader 1972. In his career, spanning 70 years, he composed at least 300 songs and released nearly 100 albums, among them Canadian and American patriotic songs. Brand's music ran the gamut from novelty songs to serious social commentary and spanned a number of genres. He also wrote a number of short stories. His daughter JEANNIE BRAND, has written a book--READ MORE HERE

"AFFORDABLE HOUSING WORKSHOP"/HOUSING CHARETTE COMMENTS AVAILABLE ON VILLAGE WEBSITE

The Village of Croton held an “Affordable Housing Workshop”/Housing Charette on 6/13/18. Approximately twenty five people were in attendance; approximately a third of these attendees were village employees or local officials. The “facilitators” from Pace Land Use Law Center, were paid fifteen hundred dollars by the village. Parking and other issues were addressed. They have made a list of the comments from last week's Housing Charette available; you can find them by clicking here.

First up, from 1982 and Croton's own Jerry Pinkney, famous illustrator---ROBINSON STAMP TO DEBUT. 

Pinkney's body of work and volunteer efforts on behalf of children with dyslexia were recognized by Senator Terrence Murphy during a ceremony held at his District Office on February 21, 2018. Read more about Pinkney here.

And finally a 1976 ad and article about 1776, with Croton's own Howard Da Silva as Benjamin Franklin.  The 1972 American musical film was directed by Peter H. Hunt. The film also starred William Daniels, Donald Madden, John Cullum, Ken Howard and Blythe Danner.

NEW FROM EFSP: CURD A.K.A. CURT JURGENS

New from our friends at European Film Star Postcards - and one of our favorite actors....

CURD A.K.A. CURT JURGENS--Tall, blonde, blue-eyed Curd Jürgens (1915-1982) played German soldiers in countless World War II films, usually billed as Curt Jurgens. 

Although the German-Austrian actor appeared in over 100 films, Jürgens considered himself primarily a stage actor. He also directed a few films, with limited success, and wrote screenplays.

Recently learned that a special 75th Anniversay edition of LASSIE COME HOME, by Croton's own Eric Knight, had been released in 2015 (you can read more about that here).

For those who don't know, Eric Knight, author of Lassie, This Above All, and numerous other books, lived on a farm with his wife here in Croton. He was a fascinating man--and the Yale Papers provide a very detailed account of his life; you can read more about that here http://bit.ly/1k30QbL

A Croton resident, William Hodson, died with Mr. Knight in a 1943 plane crash that took the lives of 35 Americans.  READ MORE HERE.
