Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

AS PROMISED, MORE ON THE BATTLE ON THE HUDSON, JOURNAL NEWS, 9/16/12, AND SOUVENIR PROGRAM - 9/16/12, JOURNAL NEWS, HIGHLIGHTS only; read the article at the link below; link is good for about 2 weeks

--CROTON RECORD SO FAR IS 2-0; SCORE C-H 14, HEN HUD 6
--Defense was outstanding against the Sailors, who sprung only a handful of big plays from a spread offense that’s always in hurry-up mode. Croton stopped its upriver rival twice on downs inside its 30 late in the game. “That’s really been our one constant,” Tigers middle linebacker Matt Gennarelli said. “It’s only two games in, but the defense has stepped up big-time. The coaches had a really strong game plan for us, and except for a few big plays we shut them down. The offense is a problem, though.”
--Hen Hud (1-1) was very physical on defense, but the legs eventually got weary.
--Gelfand scrambled for 12 yards on fourth down late in the first half to keep a Tigers drive moving forward, then Grous went into the end zone from 6 yards out four plays later…READ MORE HERE, LINK IS GOOD FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS  http://www.lohud.com/article/20120916/SPORTS02/309160039/Football-Croton-Harmon-survives-scare-from-Hen-Hud-14-6

CROTON'S PINKNEY IN THE NEWS

Croton’s Jerry Pinkney in the news: 9/14/12 – NYTIMES - The Lion, the Artist, and the Studio, Croton-on-Hudson THE artist Jerry Pinkney regularly wanders the 75 acres of wilderness surrounding his house here, and it is not uncommon for him to encounter foxes, eagles, skunks and opossums. Because he is “passionate and curious about animal life,” he said, he often stops to observe the creatures. And what he notices sometimes informs his work. HAVE YOURSELF AN AVOCADO GREEN CHRISTMAS

At a recent vintage Christmas swap here in the village, we found ourselves discussing color trends. If the 80's were all about Miami Vice Pastels, then the sixties were certainly about...that dreaded phrase...Avocado Green! Followed of course by "Burnt Orange". So when we came across this very large, but very battered General Electric ad in a December 1965 issue of Life, we just HAD to salvage as much as we could...click on the photos below...and have yourself an Avocado Green Christmas...

FEED THE BIRDS SELLING REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE CROTON ARBORETUM

Feed the Birds Selling Reusable Shopping Bags to Raise Funds for the Croton Arboretum (click on the photo)

Feed the Birds, the local source for everything related to wild-birds, as well as unique, American-made gift items, is supporting the Croton Arboretum through the sale of reusable shopping bags emblazoned with the organization’s logo and the words “We Support the Croton Arboretum.” Feed the Birds is selling the bags for $6.00 each and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Arboretum.

The Kelly green reusable shopping bags are made of Non-Woven Polypropylene (NWPP), a remarkable technological fabric that is recyclable, non-toxic, non-allergenic, and machine washable. They can be purchased at Feed the Birds, 326 South Riverside Avenue, Croton-on-Hudson from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The Croton Arboretum and Sanctuary, Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit organization that provides environmental stewardship for 20+ acres of wetlands and woods at the Jane E. Lytle Arboretum in Croton-on-Hudson, New York. The shopping bag project began as a result of the organization’s appeal for funds after being hit hard financially by the cost of last year’s Halloween snowstorm. The Arboretum was closed for seven months and clean-up cost more than $14,000—using funds that would otherwise have gone to improving the boardwalk and trails, much-needed planting projects and educational programs.

“One of the reasons we opened Feed the Birds in Croton was the area’s strong interest in nature-related activities,” said store owner Rob Armanini. “Being the local nature shop, one of the obvious things for us to do was join the Arboretum. We quickly realized they are funded entirely by donations, and the importance of those donations became even more evident when several storms caused some significant damage last fall. We wanted to help, in an on-going capacity and we’re proud to be supporting Croton's very own natural treasure."

PHOTOS FROM RIVER DAY 2012, CROTON YACHT CLUB, PART 5, COMMUNITY BOAT WORKS OF THE HUDSON VALLEY

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Despite strong winds and intermittent rain, HUDSON RIVER DAY 2012 at The Croton Yacht Club proceeded as scheduled. The chowder was great, the exhibits were wonderful, and real community outreach and fellowship were the order of the day.

We've been posting photos from this great event.

One of the nicest things about River Day at The Croton Yacht Club is the opportunity for less well known environmental, historical preservation, and community-based organizations to meet the public outside of their usual localities...Like Community Boat Works of the Hudson Valley. So What is Boat works? Peekskill's Boat Works is modeled after the South Bronx' Rocking the Boat, a similar program that started out with a teacher and a few students floating a boat in a school pool, to now becoming a 15 year old non profit organization that provides programs for more than 2,000 youth and community members every year. For more info, click on the photo below, then contact City of Peekskill Youth Bureau, 840 Main Street, 734-8418 or Captain Charlie Gruetzner, Oceanis Marine Services, 737-0253.

Despite strong winds and intermittent rain, HUDSON RIVER DAY 2012 at The Croton Yacht Club proceeded as scheduled. The chowder was great, the exhibits were wonderful, and real community outreach and fellowship were the order of the day.

We'll be posting lots of photos in the days ahead.

One of the highlights of River Day is the selection--by popular vote--of RIVER DOG.  Conceived by Croton's own Brigid Faranda, an accomplished photographer in her own right, visitors put a biscuit in the container for the dog of their choice--then the winner is announced later. (We'll let you know who won River Dog 2012 soon!) Click on the photos below.

1965 GENERAL ELECTRIC PRESENTS RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER

Some weeks ago we mentioned our finding a cache of worn but very interesting Christmas editions of Life Magazines from the 1960's and 1970's at the Peekskill flea market. Fellow vintage Rudolph collector Lisa was ecstatic when we discovered a large two page advertising spread from General Electric promoting the latest must-have gifts--accented with characters from the animated classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer showing on NBC, 1965--G.E. was the sponsor:

"GENERAL ELECTRIC - PROGRESS IS OUR MOST IMPORTANT PRODUCT - Watch Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer on TV! In full color on Sunday, December 5, over N.B.C...a special Christmas gift for all the family from General Electric".

A LOOK AT THE "RUINS" ABOVE THE DUCK POND 2012

Welcome to EverythingCroton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

We've been fascinated with "the ruins above the Duck Pond" for a very long time. Once owned by Margaret Mayo, an American actress, playwright, and screenwriter, they are all that's left of a large residence destroyed by fire.  According to the Croton Historical Society, the site was also home for about a year to the Indian mystic Mehar Baba through an arrangement with Mayo and the Schloss family.  The site is still privately held, and impressive in any season. Click on the photo. More to come.
