Hudson River Eel Project Spurs Next Gen Science Careers

2025 marked the 18th year of the community science Hudson River Eel Project, in which trained volunteers check specialized nets to monitor eel populations in Hudson Valley streams. In the spring of 2025, 1,065 volunteers spent 2,961 hours catching, counting, and releasing 141,246 young eels as they arrived from the ocean. The Eel Project was featured in the June issue of Fisheries Magazine. The article, titled “The Hudson River Eel Project: A community science framework for management and education,” discusses the project’s community science model for fisheries management, and features testimonials from eel project alumni who are now science and education professionals.
