ON THIS DATE IN 1945, "GOING MY WAY" WINS BIG AT THE ACADEMY AWARDS, BEST PICTURE TOO

On this day in 1945, "Going My Way", directed by Leo McCarey and starring Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald, won seven of its ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Click on the photos and links.

Based on a story by Leo McCarey, the film is about a new young priest taking over a parish from an established old veteran. This is a wonderful family-oriented film with excellent performances and music. It holds up remarkably well.  And if you have not yet seen it.....add it to the bucket list!  Wonderful family fare too.

Crosby sings five songs in the film, with other songs performed onscreen by Metropolitan Opera's star mezzo-soprano, Risë Stevens (in the role of a famous Metropolitan Opera performer).

The Robert Mitchell Boys Choir also performs (in the role of juvenile delinquents turned into a choir).

Going My Way was followed the next year by a sequel, The Bells of St. Mary's.

It was the highest-grossing picture of 1944.   Barry Fitzgerald, whose work on the film was nominated for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Read more about GOING MY WAY here.

Read more about the sequel, THE BELLS OF ST. MARY'S, often associated with the Christmas season and also written by Leo McCarey, with Ingrid Bergman and Bing Crosby, here.
