***THE TOWN OF CORTLANDT HAS A SPECIAL AMERICA'S 250TH ANNIVERSARY SERIES---where history lives---check out the latest installment all about GALLOWS HILL:

Located on Gallows Hill Road, is a large boulder monument with an inscribed plaque, commemorating the site of Gallows Hill. This is the site where Gen. Israel Putnam carried out the execution by hanging of Edmund Palmer, during the Revolutionary war. Edmund Palmer (d. 1777) of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., was captured near Peekskill on 15 July 1777 after allegedly breaking into the house of a “Mr. Willis” and attacking its occupants.
