HARMON WOES, THE DISPENSARY AND MORE
We were told that Harmon needed to endure higher density housing in its small commercial district to create a sustainable retail area at the intersection S. Riverside Ave. and Benedict Boulevard. As a result, we have considerable parking issues that preclude nearby homeowners from having adequate parking availability in front of their homes. If that wasn’t enough our inappropriate shortsighted board of trustees led by our current mayor, failed to ensure that marijuana dispensaries were precluded from our village in a specific opportunity given to us by the state of New York in 2021. It would appear that a series of secret meetings (does that sound like the Finkelstein development fiasco all over again) was held with our village manager and a developer and I suspect under the full knowledge of our mayor to secure a location for the dispensary in our town.
We can reasonably anticipate that this establishment will do $4 million of cannabis sales a year in $40 individual “cash” transactions on the order of 180 to 200 sales a day. That translates to 200 cars coming and going from the Pot Store intersection with four property based parking spaces available at best. This retail space will introduce a high probability of armed robbery exposure to our village that we have never experienced, 200 feet from a daycare center and 600 feet from a church.
This is what our current mayor and village manager have wished upon us. I watch with amazement the insertion of accessory rental buildings into the Small Harmon Parcels, while our zoning board precludes any subdivision of property for the people who live on up on the Hillside. When is enough enough obviously it wasn’t the creation of a 100 unit affordable housing plan immediately adjacent to a noise and pollution laden rail yard in Harmon.
