AND NOW A WORD FROM THE NYSDEC---Participate in a Christmas Bird Count
Community science is vital to helping researchers and scientists understand bird populations. Along with contributing to eBird, joining a bird count can be a fun, helpful, and insightful opportunity to connect with the birds and birding community near you. The Christmas Bird Count is organized by Audubon and takes place annually from December 14 to January 5.
To find an event near you, we recommend connecting with your local birding organization, association, or club—such as Christmas Bird Counts with Buffalo Ornithological Society.
How to Participate
Find a Circle: Use the National Audubon Society's interactive map to find a count circle near you in the Hudson Valley.
Contact the Compiler: Each circle has a compiler who manages participants and assigns routes or areas. You must arrange participation with them in advance. Their contact information is available on the Audubon map or through local Audubon society websites like the New York State Ornithological Association (NYSOA) calendar.
Join a Team or Count from Home: Compilers will place new participants with an experienced group, or if your home is within a count circle, you may be able to count birds from your feeder (with prior arrangement).
No Experience Necessary: All skill levels are welcome, and it is a family-friendly community science project.
