WOO-HOO--SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY IN THE UPPER VILLAGE
How wonderful to see the Upper Village stores so lively for Small Business Saturday. While it is true that "big box stores" have their place, it is equally true that smaller, locally owned shops, have theirs. And it is just cold enough to get everyone into the gift giving spirit. Let's keep it local folks, when we can!

VIVIEN CHEN--RIVER JOURNAL'S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH--NOVEMBER 2024
In fall 2023, Vivien Chen, a Croton-Harmon eighth-grader on the combined Croton/Hendrick Hudson Swim Team competed at the NY State Championship in the 100m freestyle. Chen had placed 1st in the Conference with a time of 54.32. This year, as a freshman at Croton-Harmon High School, Chen was a State Qualifier in the 100m freestyle (53.92) and the 50m freestyle (25:00) as she placed first in both events at the Conference Finals.
The 14-year-old Chen is now a repeat Section 1 Champion and competed in November at the NYSPHSAA Swim and Dive Championships held yearly at the Webster Aquatic Center in Albany, accompanied by her coaches, Lauren Siegel and Juliet Soricelli, who both teach in the Hendrick Hudson Central School District. Combining both Croton and Hendrick Hudson High School swimmers into one team has its challenges, but coaches, administrators, and the athletes have made it work. MSNBC SAYs IT WAS UNAWARE THAT SHARPTON'S NON-PROFIT RECEIVED $500K IN DONATIONS FROM HARRIS
•MSNBC told the Washington Free Beacon’s Chuck Ross for a report on Tuesday that the network was “unaware” that Rev. Al Shaprton’s non-profit organization had received $500,000 in donations from Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, during the same time period he interviewed her on the network.“MSNBC was unaware of the donations made to the National Action Network,” the MSNBC spokesman told Ross some two weeks after the donation was first reported. Sharpton also did not disclose the donations to network executives, according to the spokesman.
Ross added that the spokesman “wouldn’t say, though, whether the left-wing network is taking any action against Sharpton for a move that appears to violate network policy. More at MSNBC Acknowledges Al Sharpton’s Non-Profit Received Donation From the Harris Campaign Ahead of On-Air Interview

BACK ONLINE--SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: PETER STRAUSS, GLORIA SWANSON, LENORE ULRIC and OSCAR LEVANT
SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: PETER STRAUSS, GLORIA SWANSON, LENORE ULRIC and OSCAR LEVANT...as always click on the photos and links.
First up, from Croton's own Peter Strauss and Croton Shakespeare festival fame, a mini-review of 1983's SPACEHUNTER, ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE. Not the best film but then again, quite a few films from the 80's often lacked a certain something....
Next, Croton's own Gloria Swanson---sings! From 1929 and the advent of the talkies....and her film THE TRESPASSER.For those who don't know, Swanson lived in the village for a number of years. You can see exterior shots of her Mt. Airy home here.
SWANSON ALSO DIED ON THIS DATE IN 1983; read more here.
Next up, Croton's Lenore Ulric in the 1929 production of Frozen Justice, another little mini synopsis.
FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW: Frozen Justice is a 1929 American partially sound drama film with a synchronized soundtrack featuring music and sound effects directed by Allan Dwan. The film was set in Nome, Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898 and 1899 and is presumed lost. You can read more about it here. And finally, Croton notable OSCAR LEVANT. One of the elves stumbled upon this blog called Great but Forgotten A look at movies, books, TV, comics, music, and other things that deserve to be less obscure.
Click on the link to read a fab post on Levant: http://greatbutforgotten.blogspot.com/2017/09/oscar-levant-actor-musician-wit.html

FISHING SEASON CLOSURE INFO FROM THE NYSDEC
The last day of the possession season for black bass (largemouth and smallmouth) and muskellunge is November 30. For many counties the Catch & Release black bass season (using artificial lures only) will begin on December 1. However, fishing for black bass (including catch and release) is prohibited outside of the open season (June 15 - November 30) in Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Franklin and Hamilton counties.
Statewide seasons for popular sportfish such as walleye, crappie, trout, salmon and northern pike remain open in most areas of the state, so there are still plenty of fishing opportunities this time of year. Before venturing out, be sure to check the most current statewide and special fishing regulations available on the DEC website.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT---WOW---WOW---WOW----NEW FROM THE CROTON CHRONICLE---VOICE OF CROTON CANDIDATES LOSE ELECTION BUT SCORE MASSIVE & HISTORIC TALLIES FOR A CROTON WRITE-IN CAMPAIGN
Commentary: Voice of Croton candidates lose the election for two trustee seats but score massive and historic tallies for a Croton write-in campaign.
These impressive results can only be seen as a serious message to Croton Democrats that a substantial segment of the village wants them to slow down development.
MICHAEL BALTER---THE CROTON CHRONICLE--11/22/2024
The first thing to note, of course, is that Maria Slippen and Len Simon have won the two trustee seats, as the Chronicle projected earlier. This should really come as no surprise: Write-in campaigns are notoriously difficult, especially in a highly contentious presidential election year when “Vote Row A All the Way” makes a lot of sense to Democratic voters in our village.
That makes the achievement of Voice of Croton all the more important and impressive. It would be reasonable to expect everyone in the village, no matter what their views, to acknowledge that. We have researched the subject and find no evidence that any write-in candidate in modern Croton history has come even close to these tallies. The last major write-in campaigns, by the late Ginny Calcutti, were highly visible efforts, and her highest score—nearly 800 votes—has been considered to be very impressive for the past decade. SEE THE NUMBERS AND READ MORE AT Commentary: Voice of Croton candidates lose the election for two trustee seats but score massive and historic tallies for a Croton write-in campaign.

BY SPECIAL REQUEST--CROTON NOTABLE HOLBROOK BLINN IN THE DUCHESS OF DANTZIC BASED ON THE PLAY MADAME SANS-GENE
As many of you know, HOLBROOK BLINN (of Blinn Road fame) was a noted actor--and much more--you can read about him here.
So were just delighted to discover this wonderful vintage movie postcard featuring Blinn in the Duchess of Dantzic. Click on the image courtesy of Artes Escenia/Manuel Palomino Arjona. (With permission, a high quality resolution has also been sent to The Croton Historical Society). The Duchess of Dantzic is a comic opera in three acts, set in Paris, with music by Ivan Caryll and a book and lyrics by Henry Hamilton, based on the play Madame Sans-Gêne by Victorien Sardou and Émile Moreau.
And speaking about Madame Sans-Gene, CROTON'S OWN GLORIA SWANSON would star in the later SILENT FILM PRODUCTION MADAME SANS-GEN(E). Read more about that there.

THE CROTON CHRONICLE--BRUCE DOLLAR--A TOUR OF MOUNT AIRY ROAD AND "RED HILL"
A tour of Mount Airy Road and "Red Hill"
A former realtor, and now Managing Editor of The New Croton Review, would take his clients to see these historic houses--and sold a number of them himself.
Nov 23, 2024--BRUCE DOLLAR--THE CROTON CHRONICLE
Early in the last century – the Twentieth, that is – Croton-on-Hudson became a Mecca for New York’s artsy, leftist crowd. Easy access from the City via the new electric trains (which switched back to steam at Harmon, now Croton-Harmon station) enticed both leading lights and fellow travelers – actors, writers, poets, painters and left-wing intellectuals – to build or buy summer or year-round cottages in the hills above the village. By the 1920s there was a thriving Bohemian community centered in Croton, which became known as “Greenwich Village on the Hudson.”
The focal point for this community was Mount Airy Road, which starts in the village downtown and climbs up what old timers still call “Red Hill” for the political leanings of these very particular settlers. A few years ago, long-time Croton resident Cornelia Cotton, artistic and political scion and chronicler of the history of this group, gave a lecture and slide show on historical Mount Airy houses to a standing-room-only audience at the Croton Free Library. She had to stop after 2½ hours and two full carousels of slides, not half-way through her program.
As a realtor with family roots in Croton, I was always fascinated by this history. READ AND SEE MORE AT A tour of Mount Airy Road and "Red Hill"
