FYI--Had the proposed ban been enacted, the golf course etal. would have been exempt.
Croton-on-Hudson Delays Leaf Blower Ban, Will Revise Proposal - March 25, 2021
A proposal that would have outlawed gas-powered leaf blowers year-round by 2023 in Croton-on-Hudson will be pushed back and undergo a complete revision as officials look to narrow the scope of the law.
While the original proposal – drafted by the village’s Conservation Advisory Council – sought a three-year phased-in approach to reaching a complete ban and a shift to electric leaf blowers, the Board of Trustees is now looking to take a more measured approach by tackling noise pollution rather than instituting an outright ban.
The proposal, which had yet to be passed, was scheduled to go into effect in May, with a seasonal ban on gas-powered leaf blowers lasting through October, and legislation prohibiting its use from January to October in 2022. In 2023, the village would have instituted a year-round ban, with ongoing year-round education.
However, during the Mar. 8 Village Board work session, officials concluded that the proposal required more work and elected not to rush the process. They agreed to spend the remainder of this year tweaking the proposal to implement in 2022. MORE AT https://www.theexaminernews.com/croton-on-hudson-delays-leaf-blower-ban-will-revise-proposal/#

I'm left-leaning politically, but this is absolutely ridiculous. Gas-powered leaf blowers are the prime tool for local landscapers. A ban would likely mean 1) landscapers wouldn't service the area or 2) they would charge an insanely high premium to perform the same services. As such, more people -- especially older residents -- would be required to rake lawns on their own which, 1) is more likely to cause injury, especially to those who aren't experienced in raking leaves and 2) given that professionals won't be tending to various properties, the likelihood that there will be a significant amount of leaves and debris -- likely to cause injury -- exponentially increases. Is banning leaf blowers worth whatever environmental impacts are associated with such a regulation if even a single Croton resident falls and breaks his/her hip, confining that individual indefinitely?
ReplyDeleteAll the above applies to snow removal by seniors why can't the high school help us seniors by listing our names for students. Of course we will gladly pay rather than injure ourselves over a sidewalk.Local students are needed Cortlandt does it why not Croton?
