1962: DUTCH ELM DISEASE, CROTON, ROBERT SWANSON & THE BETHEL CEMETERY

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Most of us are old enough to remember the devastation caused by Dutch Elm Disease here in the U.S. during the 60's and 70's. For Croton in October 1962, however, it was an especially sad time: BETHEL'S ELM HAS BLIGHT. Click on the photos, courtesy of the outstanding archives maintained by THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY.

    1. We had four large elms on our property but by the early 70's they were all gone. Aside from the expense of taking them all down and back then, that was a lot of money for my family, my mother was very depressed about it, the house was extra hot once all the shade was gone, and we lost all our singing birds it seemed all at once. We planted some fast growing trees, I think maybe flowering plums but we always remembered those big beautiful trees.
