MR. POTATO HEAD LIVES!

Back in 2021, a friend of ours found all the makings at a craft store for re-creating MR. POTATO HEAD characters for when her niece and nephew visited over the Christmas holidays----they were entertained for hours and this has now become an annual tradition.  That always reminds us of the original toy--MR. POTATO HEAD AND COMPANY! And now without further ah-doooo:

Yes it's true...we still like "old fashioned" toys...and it's clear that even in a digital toy world, there are some that have real generational "staying power"--like yo-yos and Etch-A-Sketch and....Click on the photo above for Hasbro's Mr. Potato Head and company...
There he is...all original--with the boxes no less!---joined by Katie the Carrot, Oscar the Orange and more--all of which were featured in a previous auction at SERIOUSTOYZ.

Are you smiling yet? Your editor is.  A little backstory first.....In the 1940s, George Lerner of Brooklyn came up with the idea for a "funny face man," a character that would be made by putting pronged body and face parts into a fruit or vegetable. Lerner received a lukewarm reception when he pitched the concept to toy companies, in part because it was less than a decade after the end of World War II, and food rationing was still a recent memory. (Click on the second photo.) He  eventually convinced a company to add plastic facial parts to cereal boxes as prizes and sold his idea to them for $5,000.  READ MORE AT---IT'S NATIONAL MR. POTATO HEAD DAY.

Mr. Potato Head was the first toy to be advertised on television (1952) and it is still being produced today (Click on the third photo.)  AND....

In 1995, Mr. Potato Head made his debut in Hollywood with a leading role in the Disney's Toy Story (Don Rickles provided the original voice) and was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2000.

And just for fun. Not all Mr. Potato Head "spin-offs" have been successful... check this out...

DUNKIE Donut Head! (click on the photo). The rarest Mr. Potato Head Toy EVER!

Made by the Hasbro/Hassenfeld Brothers in the early 1960's, the "Dunkie Donut Head" is considered to be the rarest of the "Mr. Potato Head" Family of Toys! Another Rare Vintage Toy review by Mike Mozart (Youtube) and you can see it right here.

And on another note, there was an attempt in 2022 to "cancel" the "Mr." (and "Mrs.") in Mr. Potato Head in the name of inclusivity (or something), but that happily went nowhere.  LONG LIVE MR. POTATO HEAD!

GROUNDHOGS AND CANDLES AND MIDWINTER FEASTS, FROM FAMILY CHRISTMAS ONLINE(TM) --AND MORE CANDLEMAS FROM ST. AUGUSTINE CATHOLIC

Groundhog Day is February 2nd. Time for our annual Everything Croton Homage!

First up....Groundhogs and Candles and Midwinter Feasts, from Family Christmas Online™

For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day---So far will the snow swirl until May---For as the snow blows on Candlemas Day--So far will the sun shine before May.

Those words refer to a legend associated with an old church festival that brought a little light into each home during the coldest part of the year, weeks after Christmas and New Years' had passed.

Don't get me wrong - I love Christmas. But most years, it seems like just about the time life slows down enough to spend a few precious hours enjoying our family and the holiday itself, it's time to take down the lights and pack away the decorations. And then we still have twelve long, cold weeks of winter.

After New Years' this year, I thought, "Wouldn't it be nice if there was a mid-winter festival that was really in the middle of winter instead of at the 'front end'?  READ AND SEE MORE HERE.

US 'REPORT CARD' SHOWS STUDENTS HAVE FALLEN BEHIND IN READING AND MATH---THE NEWS IS NOT GOOD

American students’ reading skills have continued to decline since the COVID-19 pandemic, while their math skills have barely improved, according to a report from the Department of Education released Tuesday.

Often called the "Nation’s Report Card," the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is given every two years and considered one of the best indicators of the academic progress of the U.S. school system. The most recent exam was administered in early 2024 in every state, testing fourth- and eighth-grade students on their math and reading skills.US 'Report Card' shows students have fallen behind in reading, barely budged in math: ‘The news is not good’

VILLAGE RELEASES ALTERNATIVE BID FOR LOT A - WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN - THE CROTON CHRONICLE

Welcome to Everything Croton, (while the New One is down) a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

THE CROTON CHRONICLE
Village releases alternative bid for Lot A. What might have been, Part Two.

The competing proposal envisioned five stories, 52 units (11 affordable), and 2600 square feet of community space on the first level, accessible to all Croton residents.

Michael Balter

In late December, the Croton-on-Hudson Board of Trustees, after many months of deliberations, hearings, and considerable controversy, approved a special permit that would allow WBP Development LLC to build 100 condominium units on the site of former Parking Lot A, along with an adjacent property owned by Croton Point Realty Inc.

The village had received two proposals for the Lot A redevelopment, the one from WBP and a competing bid whose details were not publicly released. As we reported earlier, the Chronicle attempted last spring to receive a copy of the losing proposal via the New York Freedom of Information Law (FOIL.) The village denied that request, on the grounds that officials were still in contract negotiations with WBP to sell the site, and that divulging it could affect the final sales price. Our appeal of that decision was also denied.

As we editorialized at the time, we believed that refusal to tell the citizens of Croton the details of a competing bid for the sale of village land—property that belonged to all of us—was a violation of basic democratic principles. THE CROTON GRILLE IS BACK! THE CROTON CHRONICLE

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

The Croton Grille is back!
Brothers Matt and Mike Camerino return to the village and take over the spot at 140 Grand Street they had vacated just before the pandemic.

MICHAEL BALTER--THE CROTON CHRONICLE

There have been a lot of restaurants at 140 Grand Street over the years, but in recent times there have been two—or maybe three, depending on how you count. From 2017 until just before the pandemic broke out in early 2020, brothers Matt and Mike Camerino ran The Croton Grille in the space; then chef Enzo DeRaco took over and created 140 Grand, which was in business until last fall; and now, the Camerinos are back, again with The Croton Grille.

The old/new establishment reopened this afternoon, January 28, and it seems to stand a good chance of once again becoming a Croton favorite. Read and see more at The Croton Grille is back! - by Michael Balter

PRESS RELEASE-----US DEPT. OF EDUCATION ENDS BIDEN BOOK BAN HOAX

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) today announced that it has dismissed 11 complaints related to so-called “book bans.” The complaints alleged that local school districts’ removal of age-inappropriate, sexually explicit, or obscene materials from their school libraries created a hostile environment for students – a meritless claim premised upon a dubious legal theory. Effective Jan. 24, 2025, OCR has rescinded all department guidance issued under the theory that a school district’s removal of age-inappropriate books from its libraries may violate civil rights laws. OCR is also dismissing six additional pending allegations of book banning and will no longer employ a “book ban coordinator” to investigate local school districts and parents working to protect students from obscene content...more at U.S. Department of Education Ends Biden’s Book Ban Hoax | U.S. Department of Education

VINTAGE VALENTINE'S DAY CANDY: A LITTLE HISTORY OF SWEETHEARTS A.K.A. CONVERSATION HEARTS AND MUCH MORE

And now by special request.... a little vintage Valentine's Day Candy post....SWEETHEARTS A.K.A. CONVERSATION HEARTS. Here's a quick history... Click on the photo and links.

You remember them.....Each heart is printed with a message such as "Be Mine", "Kiss Me", "Call Me", "Let's Get Busy", or "Miss You".

FROM MENTALFLOSS--Valentine's Day means chalky candy hearts with a lot to say. But what's behind these very loud little candies?

The story of conversation hearts began in 1847, when a Boston pharmacist named Oliver Chase longed for a way to get in on the apothecary lozenge craze. Lozenges were quickly gaining steam as the medicine conveyance of choice, and were also popular remedies for sore throats and bad breath. But making lozenges was complicated and time-consuming—the process involved a mortar and pestle, kneading dough, rolling it out, and cutting it into discs that would eventually become lozenges.
