MAYOR SCHMIDT'S LETTER TO MTA CHAIRMAN LHOTA - July 13, 2017

Joseph J. Lhota
Chairman, Metropolitan Transportation Authority
420 Lexington Avenue
New York NY 10017-3739

Since 1849, the railroad station has been a part of Croton. The history of our Village and the history of railroading are at the very heart of our identity as a community. Many of our residents have worked at the Harmon Yards and retired here in Croton. We are a village which has always valued the railroad as a positive contributor to our community.

The New York Central Railroad leased the coffee stand to the Marafito family in 1966. The family served coffee to the last passengers to board the 20th Century Limited as it made its last journey into railroad history. The family served passengers of the New York Central, the Penn Central, Conrail, and today passengers of Metro-North and Amtrak. When Theresa Fiorentino perished on the railroad tracks in 2008, the community of Croton grieved as we had lost one of our own.

The history of the Marafito Family is every bit as much a part of our history as it is part of the history of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). For more than 50 years, the commuters of Croton have known that when they arrive at the station, they will start their day with coffee and a smile.

Nance Marafito Cohen is a Croton institution. She has diligently served the commuters of Croton, and her customers are the MTA’s customers.

We, the residents of Croton, are your customers. We ask that you consider the half century of service that the Marafito Family has given to your customers. We ask that Nance be allowed to remain as she has always been—a member of our Croton family.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gregory Schmidt
Mayor, Village of Croton-on-Hudson

Note: we will post photos from this morning's event later, along with info about how you can help our neighbor Nance's Coffee

  1. These are not nice people. The MTA representative this morning threatened to sic MTA legal on me, and one of the prospective bidders (the guy in the black shirt) taunted me as he was taking the tour.

The Croton community support for Nance was strong this morning, and I hope we can help her to save her business of 50 years. She is a genuinely nice lady and I used to always get my coffee there when I was commuting.
