THE CROTON VILLAGE GARDEN CLUB STRIKES AGAIN, ANOTHER NEGLECTED PROPERTY MADE BEAUTIFUL!
Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of
all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our
schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
Neither rain nor snow--or in this case a soaking rain all weekend--stops the volunteers of The Croton Village Garden Club.
Click on the photo to see their latest efforts--the clean-up and new garden at the long neglected strip at the village municipal building.
For more info about the Croton Village Garden Club, contact Rich Zumbach at rdzumbach@yahoo.com
And once again thanks to the club's volunteers...without them, there'd be a lot more weed infested village property to look at.

MORE ACTRESS LENORE ULRIC, THE CROTON CONNECTION
Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things
Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in
short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
As many of you know, The Croton Historical Society recently hosted a Croton postcard exhibit. Also included in that exhibit were photos and rare memorabilia of Lenore Ulric, a successful Broadway and film star who lived in the village from 1927 until 1951. (Her name is sometimes seen spelled with an "H" at the end, but she opted for the shortened version around 1918 or so).
Miss Ulric, discovered by Broadway playwright and producer David Belasco, starred in such popular vehicles as "Tiger Rose", "Kiki", "The Harem" and "LuLu Belle" and was particularly noted for her portrayals of the "fem fatale" hot-tempered fiery woman.
We thought you'd enjoy seeing some additional Ulric material we've discovered in our vintage magazine collection, particularly from editions of the long ago-defunct Motion Picture Magazine in the 1920's and earlier. This article is from 1917. Click on the images and enjoy. There will be more at some point down the road.

THANK YOU CROTON LIONS, A LETTER FROM JENNIFER & PAUL KOONEY
Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things
Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in
short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
THANK YOU CROTON LIONS!
A letter to our Croton community,
A very big, heartfelt thank you goes out to our Croton Lions Club for once again sponsoring our son’s Little League team. That team once again won the Croton Little League Majors Division Championship on Saturday, June 20! (See Photo) We would also like to thank Miracle Home Improvement for sponsoring our other son’s team, as well as all of the Croton businesses and clubs that sponsor all of the Croton Little League teams. Without your support, the program wouldn’t be as vibrant as it is and certain players might not have the opportunity to play. Thank you for sponsoring our teams!
We would also like to thank the Board of the Croton Little League for making this year fun and exciting for players and parents alike. Special thanks to all of the Division VPs, the coaches, managers, and official scorekeepers, especially Dan Osborne, Billy Ambose, Max Ambose, Peter Tomasi, Connor Ginman, Glenn Simpson and Kristy and Adam Cohen. Without all of you, we wouldn’t have Little League!
And, while we are at it, a special thank you goes out to the Board of our Croton AYSO, the coaches and referees, especially Joe Otero and Richard Szkodzinski. We watched our child have fun, grow, and develop his skills this year, all thanks to you!
We are so blessed to live in a community of such caring and giving people, businesses and not-for-profit groups. Not only do all of you enable our children to have fun, develop new skills and learn sportsmanship, but you are also fabulous role models, teaching them to one day, give back to community themselves. Thank you for a great year!
Warmly, Paul and Jennifer Kooney

YET ANOTHER HOUSING/MIXED USE DEVELOPER SEEKS VARIANCE IN HARMON; 7/8 PUBLIC HEARING
As was the case with the Deli and 6 apartments on Benedict--which has been granted multiple variances from the Harmon re-zoning law by Croton officials so that it will be built--the new owner of the former "Nappy property" on Benedict Blvd. is also seeking a variance. (379 S. Riverside Ave; Lawrence Doyle; Edward Gemmola)
See the notice published on page 8 of the June 28, 2015 edition of THE GAZETTE under PUBLIC NOTICES. Click on the image.
Under the Harmon re-zoning assurances by the board and its supporters, residents were told that this site, if developed, would contain only 6 apartments; the current proposal calls for 11 instead; the commercial spaces that will be created are extremely small versus the site's use for housing. As to those who have asked if this would be good for the village's "HUD" demographics, we do not know whether or not it will be low income, market rate, or some mix of the two at the present time--or what the impacts of continued development will be on the school district. Please direct your questions to the appropriate officials or attend the public hearing on 7/8/15.
As soon as the ZBA agenda is up for 7/8, the link will be posted here.

NEW FROM EUROPEAN FILM STAR POSTCARDS: SESSUE HAYAKAWA
The latest from one of our favorite blogs: European Film Star Postcards.
Today's installment is all about Sessue Hayakawa, rumored to have periodically visited Croton-on-Hudson's Nikko Inn in the early 1920's---but which we have never been able to confirm.
And now from European Film Star Postcards:
Sessue Hayakawa (1889–1973) was a Japanese actor who starred in more than 80 American, Japanese, French, German, and British films. He was the first Asian actor to find stardom first in Hollywood and later in Europe. His 'broodingly handsome' good looks and typecasting as a sinister villain with sexual dominance made him a heartthrob among female audiences in the 1910s and early 1920s. Nowadays he is best remembered for his Oscar-nominated turn as Japanese POW camp commander Saito in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957). NOT TO WORRY: THE "DESIGN GUIDELINES" IN HARMON RE-ZONING WILL MAKE EVERYTHING LOOK BEAUTIFUL, TONIGHT'S BD. MEETING, GOUVEIA AND MORE DEBT
A resident says: "I'm not worried. The *design guidelines* in the Harmon re-zoning law will ensure that we have a beautiful dining and pedestrian friendly experience".
We'll spare you the rest.
The fact is that although they were promised, there are NO design guidelines in Harmon re-zoning. And as is the case with the Benedict Blvd. project (the deli with six small apartments, none of them the promised 1,000 square feet in size as well), the village is more than willing to provide multiple variances from the law anyway--and has.
For more on tonight's village board meeting, which also includes $204,000 for the Gouveia/Something Good in the World "Park"--and almost eleven million in additional debt all in one night, ETC.--visit https://www.facebook.com/crotonunited
The meeting starts @ 8pm. For those who have asked about the status of the former Nappy property "mixed use" apartment project, stay tuned.
