Welcome
to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history,
our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of
worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
A former village resident
was once again waxing nostalgic for the days when she would shop with her Mom for the
Easter holiday right here in the village. And so, by special
request...Vintage Easter Shopping in Croton....some links you might
enjoy:
There was the trip to Swanson's for daffodils, lilies and of course, to order Mom's orchid corsage. Friday nights during Lent meant fish from Cole's Market or a night out for "fried flounder" at "the diner"----Easter cards, chenille chicks, the latest comic books and chocolate came from Pop Berger's--while
straw baskets, plastic eggs, lace-trimmed ankle socks (to go with those
new Easter shoes) and other assorted odds and ends came from Elliott's and the old Grand Union (DON'T FORGET THOSE TRIPLE S BLUE STAMPS!)

HOME DEPOT, WOKE, GETS HAMMERED FOR SHAMING EMPLOYEES OVER "WHITE PRIVILEGE", CANADA
A Canadian branch of Home Depot sparked outrage after it posted a notice to employees about the benefits of “white privilege” and included a checklist for those who are “white, male, Christian, cisgender, able-bodied, and heterosexual.”
The notice, which is titled “Leading Practices — Unpacking privilege,” was posted in an employee lounge at a Home Depot in Calgary, Alberta.
A spokeswoman from Home Depot’s US headquarters confirmed to The Post
that the white privilege notice was material from its Canadian
division. She said it hadn’t been approved by the company’s diversity
and inclusion department. The flyer had a Home Depot logo at the top. MORE AT https://nypost.com/2022/03/23/home-depot-ripped-for-shaming-employees-over-white-privilege/

& NOW SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: RALPH WALDO TRINE, LENORE ULRIC AND PETER STRAUSS
One of our most popular series here at the blog.....click on the photos and links. AND NOW... SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: RALPH WALDO TRINE, LENORE ULRIC, AND PETER STRAUSS.
FIRST UP, from 1913 and PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY---reports of his death were greatly exaggerated (smile)---a blurb about Ralph Waldo Trine---of Mt. Airy and NEW THOUGHT COLONY FAME--and mentioning his home here in Croton.
For those who don't know, Trine was an American philosopher, author, and teacher. He wrote many books on the New Thought movement. Trine was a close friend of Henry Ford and had several conversations with him about success in life. He moved to Mount Airy when he was 30 years old; at that time, he met his future wife Grace Hyde an author of poetry and plays. Living in the area for many years, while raising their only child, Robert, they became involved in metaphysical seminars that were held at Lake Oscawana. READ MORE ABOUT TRINE HERE.
The 1920's produced some fabulous fashions---among them Lucile Designs.
Here's Croton's Lenore Ulric modeling two examples---from Theatre Magazine 1920.
For those who don't know, Ulric was a side feature in a 2014 exhibit hosted by THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
You can view more from that exhibit and read about Ulric's Croton connection here. And in case you missed it, Ulric's was married here in Croton as well; click on the link to read more: https://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2022/03/lenore-ulric-married-to-sydney-blackmer.html
And finally---worth a repeat viewing---and we did......
Peter Strauss---who got his start in the Croton Shakespeare Festival----IN THE 2000 FILM, "A FATHER'S CHOICE".
The fast-paced city life of two
sisters is turned upside down when they are sent to live in the country
with their father after their mother is killed.
Predictable
yes, but a great family story and the kind one seldom sees these
days.....more's the pity....
It stars Peter Strauss, Mary McDonnell, Michelle Trachtenberg - available on Amazon - more at https://www.amazon.com/Fathers-Choice-Peter-Strauss/dp/B07PWYDDJ6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=a+father%27s+choice&qid=1598354390&sr=8-1

BY SPECIAL REQUEST--OUTSTANDING VINTAGE WALKIE TALKIE FLICKR PHOTO ALBUM

In an age of cell phones, smart phones, etc., it's hard for the younger set to imagine....the Walkie Talkie!
Courtesy of Joe Haupt, an outstanding vintage Walkie Talkie Flickr photo album; click here to see it.
The first device to be widely nicknamed a "walkie-talkie" was developed by the US military during World War II, the backpacked Motorola SCR-300.
It was created by an engineering team in 1940 at the Galvin Manufacturing Company (forerunner of Motorola). For more about the history of the Walkie Talkie, click here!
