1921, CROTON'S GLORIA SWANSON IN "THE SHULAMITE" A.K.A. UNDER THE LASH

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

As many of you know, Gloria Swanson was one of the village's most notable residents. (Her home still stands on Mt. Airy Road). You can read more about that here.

Here's a fab find from our friends at European Film Star Postcards---a French postcard featuring Swanson reading THE SHULAMITE......CLICK ON THE PHOTO.

The Shulamite was used as the basis for the 1921 silent movie Under the Lash starring Gloria Swanson, Russell Simpson and Mahlon Hamilton, directed by Sam Wood. The dark and gloomy screenplay, and Swanson's role without glamorous gowns and jewelry, was a deliberate change from her former roles. The movie included advanced special effects in the storm sequence, where trees were blown up to appear as though they had been struck by lightning.  YOU CAN READ MORE HERE.
