MADAME NORDICA'S BATH POWDER FOR REDUCTION OF WEIGHT
A WORD TO ALL WOMEN
"HAVING TIRED EVERY OTHER KNOWN MEANS OF REDUCING WEIGHT, I HAVE SUCCEEDED BY A METHOD OF MY OWN.
THE BATH POWDER BEARING MY NAME IS THE SAME I HAVE USED WITH MOST AMAZING RESULTS.
AS MY OWN DISCOVERY, MY OWN FORMULA PROVEN IN MY OWN USE, I RECOMMEND IT FOR THE GENERAL GOOD OF HUMANITY.
MY EXPERIENCE, AND THE ENDORSEMENTS OF MANY PROMINENT PEOPLE, ARE ALL CONTAINED IN A LITTLE BOOK--WILL YOU WRITE FOR IT?"

ALMOST GONE...BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: THE SPUDNUT
Everything
Croton continues its very popular series GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN....and so without further ah-doo...SPUDNUTS!
Spudnut Shops were American franchised stores selling donuts made with potato flour called Spudnuts--founded by Al and Bob Pelton.
The parent company no longer exists, but independent stores remain. The original recipe is based on a folk recipe that traces back to Germany. In 1946, the company began establishing a nationwide chain of franchised Spudnut Shops. In 1948, one new franchisee opened a store after paying $50 (approx. $450 in 2010 dollars) plus the cost of 100 sacks of spudnut flour...By 1948, over 200 Spudnut Shops had sprung up across the USA. Spudnuts were advertised widely, with the slogan "Coast to coast...Alaska to Mexico The cartoon character "Mr. Spudnut" frequently appeared in advertisements, restaurants, and even in parades. By 1954, there were more than 300 shops in 38 states. In 1964, Spudnut shops were selling about 400,000 spudnut doughnuts per day. ANOTHER CROTON VILLAGE GARDEN CLUB PROJECT--CAN U HELP ON 7/18?
Once again, many thanks to the volunteers of the Croton Village Garden Club; without them, so many of our parks and other village spaces would continue to look neglected. And now a word from Richard Zumbach:
Click on the photo below to see what the Croton Landing flagpole garden looked like last year when we first planted it. It’s grown a lot since then and looks great. And now, tomorrow--7/18--we are gong to plant the outside of the circle to complete the original garden design. It’s a great entrance way garden to one of the best parks in the county. Join us tomorrow morning at the flagpole at 9:30 to be part of this effort. It won’t take long. Bring a shovel/etc. and a friend. See you tomorrow.

TOUGHMAN ON 7/20 WORK SESSION AGENDA, SEEKS 5 YEAR RENEWAL, PHOTOS, LINKS, PROBLEMS, LETTERS
Welcome to Everything Croton, a
collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our
businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
VILLAGE WORK SESSION 7/20/15: ITEM #5 ON THIS AGENDA - DR. RICHARD IZZO, TOUGHMAN SEEKS 5 YEAR RENEWAL FROM CROTON; CURRENT CONTRACT EXPIRES DECEMBER 2015. Click on the link for the documents related to this agenda item: http://crotononhudson.novusagenda.com/agendapublic/CoverSheet.aspx?ItemID=2032&MeetingID=365
BY SPECIAL REQUEST, ONLY SOME OF THE LINKS & PHOTOS RELATED TO ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH THE TOUGHMAN--FROM JUST 2014 ALONE: ADDITIONAL PRIOR YEAR ISSUES, PROBLEMS, COMPLAINTS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

--Resident Peter Marengo also left a very important 9/7 comment regarding last year's event at a posting; it is re-printed as follows below: "I am writing about the Toughman event that is occurring today in our village. As a practicing Catholic, when an entire village is taken over to the extent of shutting down major roads and arteries on an entire Sunday morning in order to host such an event is disgraceful. My family and I were late for 8:00 Mass (we attend St. Augustine in Ossining, just over the 9A bridge), even though we left the house at 7:35 knowing that we were in for detours. The detour for a 2-mile trip was 15 miles.
Traditionally, Sundays are set aside, especially in the mornings, as a day of rest, reflection and out of respect for faith-based people. I understand that we only have 2 weekend days per week but we should reconsider hosting these events or at least propose that we wait until 12 noon to altar the roads so that people may go to their respective church services. By law, citizens cannot buy alcohol until that time on a Sunday for religious purposes – we should do the same for things like this that have an even more dramatic effect on the community at large."

LAST WEEK'S ACCIDENT AND OTHER AGENDAS
It's
always troubling when an unfortunate accident is used to further other
agendas. In a letter to this week's Gazette, it's been represented that the
Croton Point Avenue "Improvement" Project could have prevented last
week's accident in which a woman's foot was run over by a tractor trailer.
According to News 12, the injured woman stepped off the
curb while the truck was turning onto the highway.
There's
nothing in the proposed project that would have prevented such an accident, and
there is no guarantee that the "improvements" that are proposed will
stop such accidents from occurring in the future. The matter remains under
investigation.

2015 CROTON ARBORETUM TOUR RAISES $3,000 - THANK YOU ALL!
Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of
all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our
schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
Thanks to the generosity of homeowners who opened their beautiful gardens, the support of local businesses, and the hard work of many volunteers, the 19th Annual Croton Arboretum Garden Tour raised more than $3,000.
The tour is a major fund-raising event for our all-volunteer, non-profit organization, which provides environmental stewardship for 20+ acres of wetlands and woods at the Jane E. Lytle Memorial Arboretum in Croton. The money raised will support regular maintenance, educational programs and restoration projects.
We hope you will visit the Arboretum this summer to enjoy our boardwalk and trails. If you’d like more information, or to make a donation, visit our website www.crotonarboretum.org

TIME TO MEET SOME OF THE 2015 CROTON VILLAGE GARDEN CLUB VOLUNTEERS
Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of
all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our
schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
Recently we told you about a wonderful new garden created by the volunteers of the Croton Village Garden Club at the Municipal Building parking lot perimeter on Van Wyck Street. Weed-ridden and long neglected, it is now planted with beautiful perennials and more. You can see it again--and the volunteers who made it possible--by clicking on the photos below.
But first...a message from Richard Zumbach: Just thought I would share some additional pictures of the latest garden that has been created on Van Wyck Street. If you haven’t had a chance to see it, it’s worth a little excursion over by the Municipal Building. While you are there, also take a look at the WWI monument that members of the club have planted and maintained. Back to Van Wyck. Thanks to Susan who came up with the idea, Molly who helped with the design, Linda and Ann Marie who had fun planting all those plants with Susan, and thanks to the three best helpers in the youth category that we could commandeer. Another garden, another step in the club’s quest to make Croton beautiful, one garden at a time.
Just a reminder, this Thursday will be our July meeting
at the Library, 7:30 in the Ottinger room. After this Thursday’s meeting, our
next meeting will be the third Thursday in September.
See you Thursday. Bring your ideas for what the club can do, especially for this Fall. It’s never to early to plan.
Regards, Rich

Everything

FOR FANS OF BRITISH ACTRESS PATRICIA ROC
Our friends at European Film Star Postcards have put up a post on British actress, Patricia Roc. (Click on the photo.)
For those who don't know: Fresh-faced Patricia Roc (1915-2003) was between 1943 and 1953 one of Britain's top 10 box office stars. The elegant, well spoken actress seemed the epitome of the English rose...In the US Roc made only one film, Walter Wanger's production Canyon Passage (Jacques Tourneur, 1946). In this offbeat Western she again loses the hero (Dana Andrews) to the bigger star (Susan Hayward). This brief move to Hollywood was a loan-out arrangement between Rank and Universal Studios of British in return for American film actors.
During filming, Roc was romantically linked with Ronald Reagan. READ MORE HERE http://filmstarpostcards.blogspot.com/2015/07/patricia-roc.html
