Welcome to Everything Croton, a
collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our
businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.
POST TOUGHMAN 2014, BOB RIEKERT LETTER TO THE EDITOR, WHAT'S IT GOING TO TAKE...SEE BELOW
To the Editor:
It occurred to me that the Toughman racers should be forced to use the
one lane on the north side of Croton Point Ave. They should access Rte.
9 only on the southbound down ramp. And they should cross Riverside
onto the north side lane at the light. It seems to me that would make
it much easier controlling traffic and racers crossing Riverside at that
point.
This would allow traffic to have unimpeded access to the other three
ramps to Rte. 9, and the Croton RR station, as well as to and from the
Shop Rite shopping center. It would also allow the one lane south on
Rte. 9 to be left open if the Committee ever got their act together made
it possible.
Even after the south bound lanes of Rte. 9 are opened to traffic,
motorists are blocked in every direction as race stragglers cross the
five traffic lanes on the south side of Riverside. This goes on until
after 3:30PM.
It was also reported that police were oblivious to irate motorists at an
earlier hour when an officer spoke to one driver in front of the
Farmers Market while the light on Riverside changed from green to red
three times over...
Isn't there any one out there who knows what they're doing?
What would it take to convince the Village and Race Committee decision
makers that "We're mad as hell, and we're not going to take it any
longer..." ???

Thank you Mr. Riekert. This is getting ridiculous year after year. Let me add that it's just not Croton businesses it hurts. I suppose it's nice to be able to prove you are in great shape but must these people do so at the expense of everyone else across the county?
ReplyDeleteIf as a village we want to either eliminate this race or force the race organizers to make changes that benefit the village (but not the racers), we need to speak up and get the village board to demand changes.
ReplyDeleteTraffic was even snarled in the upper village at the dummy light. I am not sure if the village board witnessed any of this, but village residents and business owners need to speak up. The race committee doesn't care about croton residents, why should they?
Further, we should propose to the board a solution. My solution would be: (i) move the race to august or later in september, but not the first weekend back after school starts when everyone is busy getting back to post summer life and (ii) consider keeping one south bound lane open on the bridge (although this would lead to massive traffic by train station as all route 9 traffic would be trying to get on the highway at this point) and (iii) see if the running portion of the race can use the viaduct trail (it is not just the fact that rt 9 is closed, but also the only other exit out of town (129) is impacted as well.
Great ideas but this board never listens. Think Croton Pt. Ave, the garbage transfer station, Gouveia to name a few. The truth is that without the village Toughman won't happen. We should just say no. It's not just 6 hours as our full time mayor has said.
DeleteClearly they need our permission or they wouldn't be looking for a contact. So let's just say go....yourself
