A SALUTE TO KIRK DOUGLAS FROM OUR FRIENDS AT EFSP

From our friends at European Film Star Postcards, a salute to the late Kirk Douglas.

Cleft-chinned and steely-eyed American superstar Kirk Douglas (1916) passed away on 5 February 2020 in Los Angeles, at the age of 103. The legendary actor, producer and director made his film debut in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) with Barbara Stanwyck.

Douglas soon developed into a leading box-office star throughout the 1950s, known for serious dramas, Westerns and war films. Our favourites are the two classics he made with Stanley Kubrick, Paths of Glory (1957) and Spartacus (1960). During his long career, he appeared in more than 90 films. Mr. Douglas, rest in peace, EFSP salutes you. READ AND SEE MUCH MORE HERE.

SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES: GLORIA SWANSON, LEONORE DOSKOW, AND HOWARD DA SILVA

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Continuing this very popular blog series into 2020....SOME MORE RECENTLY UNEARTHED BITS & PIECES ABOUT CROTON NOTABLES...for this installment...GLORIA SWANSON, LEONORE DOSKOW, AND HOWARD DA SILVA.

As always, click on the photos and links.

First up,  a 1931 movie magazine ad for Gloria Swanson in "INDISCREET"...(For those who don't know, Swanson was one of the village's most notable residents and lived for some time on Mt. Airy Road

As for Indiscreet, it's a 1931 American pre-Code comedy film directed by Leo McCarey and starring Swanson and Ben Lyon. The screenplay by Buddy G. DeSylva, Lew Brown, and Ray Henderson, based on their story Obey That Impulse, originally was written as a full-fledged musical but only two songs made it into the final product. The film is available on DVD.  You can read more about it here.

Next, a 1987 Mother's Day ad featuring the latest jewelry  from Leonore Doskow, Inc.  For those who don't know, the Doskows lived on Finney Farm.  A world renowned silversmith , Leonore began her career while still a college student when she received permission from her dean to make her jewelry in the science laboratory. After studying Art History at the Sorbonne in Paris for a summer, she opened a tiny shop in Philadelphia. After a few years, she and her husband moved to New York City, but it was the middle of the Depression and they found themselves unemployed with a baby on the way. Lenore would make items like tie clips in large batches at home, and her husband David would sell them to gift shops and boutiques. They moved to Westchester in 1941, where their business flourished. She and her husband owned and operated Leonore Doskow, Inc., a jewelry company selling to upscale stores around the country from 1935 until the 1980s, when her son and his wife took over the company. Many of her early, pins, necklaces and bracelets are collector’s items. She died in 2009 at the age of 97 (info via The Croton Historical Society)

And finally, a wonderful blog spot--with lots of photos--for Croton's Howard Da Silva:  Howard Da Silva: Character Actor Supreme of 1776, THE LOST WEEKEND, DAVID AND LISA and More

First up---and if you are easily triggered by these things--skip this paragraph and the first two photos entirely---we were all joking the other day about vintage "girl's toys"--and how many of them centered around hearth and home especially in the 40'S, 50's and early 60's.

From mock mixers--like the one to the right made by Marx/Linemar--to irons and more---loved them then....still love them now.

The toys are followed by a fab 1956 edition of Jackie Gleason's Funny Book for Boys and Girls....

And finally for your enjoyment....Courtesy once again of LOC, another outstanding old photo, the 1922 Dorset Christmas tree, sliced and diced so you can appreciate all that vintage Christmas--and toy---goodness. Again, click on the photos.

HEN HUD ALREADY FEELING FINANCIAL EFFECT OF INDIAN POINT CLOSURE

For those who have asked, part of Croton lies in the Hen Hud High School district.

EXAMINER NEWS--One of the two remaining nuclear units at Indian Point isn’t closing until April, but the Hendrick Hudson School District is already experiencing a financial aftershock.

“Reality is setting in,” Hendrick Hudson Superintendent of Schools Joseph Hochreiter remarked last week at a joint meeting of the New York State Indian Point Closure Task Force and Community Unity Task Force in Cortlandt. “We know a good deal couldn’t last forever.”

In the proposed 2020-21 budget, Hendrick Hudson will receive $3.9 million less from Entergy, owners of the plants in Buchanan. Despite utilizing $3 million for a state cessation fund and $1.4 million from fund balance, residents in the district are looking at an 8.7% tax increase when they vote on the $82.6 million budget in May.

The following year, Hendrick Hudson will be receiving about $10 million less from Entergy as the pilot program winds down.

Overall, when the pilot ends in 2025, the district is facing a $24 million hit, or 33% of its budget. The Village of Buchanan is set to lose $4 million, or 46% of its operating funds. The Town of Cortlandt will lose $800,000 annually, or two percent of its budget...................MORE AT https://www.theexaminernews.com/hen-hud-already-feeling-financial-effect-of-indian-point-closure/

THANK YOU TOWER LADDER 44 MEMBERS & CONGRATULATIONS TO FIRE FIGHTER RICHARD LEACH

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Members of our Tower Ladder 44 spent Saturday morning drilling on different tasks they are expected to perform as our only Ladder or “Truck” Company.Reviewed were setting up the rig for aerial use, ground ladders and working off the aerial platform. Driver Candidate Richard Leach also got to spend some time at the controls, learning how to “fly the stick.”

FF Richard Leach should also be commended for graduating from the Maritime Academy on Friday, receiving a Bachelors of Engineering in Naval Architecture, as well as his USCG Unlimited Third Mates License.

Richard has been a part of the CFD several years, beginning as an Explorer at age 14. We’re very proud of his accomplishments and know he will continue to succeed at whatever he does!

BY SPECIAL REQUEST, VILLAGE ACKNOWLEDGES AREA THEY WANT RE-ZONED WILL FLOOD DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE, A JUNE 2019 LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Public hearing for rezoning is 2/3, 2nd floor, 8 pm, Board of Trustees meeting; the full agenda is here.

And now, by special request, a letter from June 2019:

OF FLOODING, BUYOUT OPTIONS, BROOK & RIVERSIDE AVENUE RE-ZONING--WHY IS THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES PUTTING INNOCENT PEOPLE AT RISK?

Why is the Board of Trustees Putting Innocent People at Risk?

June 15, 2019

The following letter was published in this week’s issue of the Gazette.

To the editor:

I am not one of those residents who is granted private briefings by Ms. Gallelli or Mr. Simmons, let alone someone who has input into the opaque operations of our village government. I certainly don’t get to sit in on those secret “Executive Sessions” in which the Croton Board of Trustees discusses “real property” matters. But I hope that some charitable reader of The Gazette who is granted admission to the Croton inner circle can clarify something for me:

Given what the Board of Trustees know about how climate change is going to affect Croton in the coming years, why is the Board of Trustees putting innocent people at risk?

The report on a little-known workshop on climate change shows in detail that the rise in sea level will endanger residents living in Half Moon Bay, Brook Street, and North Riverside. So why do our Board of Trustees and Village officials want to endanger lives by encouraging construction of apartments in an area that is—by their own admission—becoming a floodplain?

A half-day workshop to discuss government response to climate change in Croton, Cortlandt and Buchanan was held on October 18, 2018. Attending that day were Ms. Gallelli and a “who’s who” of Croton government, gathered with officials from Buchanan and Cortlandt. This included top officials from the Village of Croton and also from the Croton-Harmon school district.

A report of that meeting was issued in January 2019, and on page 13 of the report it says something of great relevance to the rezoning of Brook Street and Riverside Avenue: “Village of Croton to determine buyout options and implications for North/South Riverside Ave and Brook Street, as well as the possibility of levees.”

ABOUT THAT PLASTIC BAG BAN---NY SAYS WEGMANS, OTHERS MUST ALLOW OLD PLASTIC BAGS IN STORES FOR REUSE

NY says Wegmans, others must allow old plastic bags in stores for reuse==Syracuse, N.Y. — Stores must allow shoppers to bring in their old, saved plastic bags for use at checkout after the state’s plastic bag ban goes into effect. The question of whether that would be allowed under the new law was one of the most frequent we heard when we asked you for your questions on the bag ban. The state Department of Environmental Conservation weighed in on the topic in a statement on Thursday. The ban, known officially as the Bag Waste Reduction Act, says stores are not allowed to prevent anyone from using a bag of any kind that they bring in to carry away goods, according to the DEC.  READ MORE AT https://www.syracuse.com/state/2020/01/ny-says-wegmans-others-must-allow-old-plastic-bags-in-stores-for-reuse.html
