TURN ON THE RADIO: 1941

Yes before there was television...there was radio. The only way to get "up to the minute" news, entertainment, escape, etc. Here's what we were listening to in 1941. Click on the scans. Enjoy.

MORE FROM THE CROTON VILLAGE GARDEN CLUB, JULY 2013

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Once again, many thanks to the newly resurrected Croton Village Garden Club. Their attention and time dedicated to the village's often neglected properties has been a breath of fresh air a long time coming. Kudos to all the volunteers. Click on the photos to see the 'maturing' results of what they've done with the historic "dummy light" in the Upper Village.

See only some of what the club has been up to at the following links---lots of photos!

LESSONS ON THE HUDSON: DENNIS KOONEY

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

We are delighted to tell you about an article that recently appeared in BOATING ON THE HUDSON featuring Croton's own Dennis Kooney:

LESSONS ON THE HUDSON by Dennis Kooney (Grandfather) -This is the story of Colin’s second striped bass caught on the Hudson River. In previously documenting Colin’s first striper caught last year, he asked me if I was going to write a story about this fish. This is that story, which is more of a lesson and an experience that we both will not forget.  READ MORE HERE http://boatingonthehudson.com/images/flippingbook/2013/06_june/Articles/LESSONS_ON_THE_HUDSON.pdf

VINTAGE NEON & ILLUMINATED ADVERTISING SIGNS

Those of us who create our own model railroad layouts, vintage dioramas, or even putz houses from scratch, are always looking for that little extra "something" that goes pop. For some that's diy billboards featuring vintage or retro advertising. (Click on http://bit.ly/16WghIz for sample art and a how-to from Howard Lamey and Paul Race).

For others there's inspiration to be found in old neon or illuminated signs. So when we came across this vintage catalog for White Way Electrical Advertising Displays, we just had to share some of the images. Click on the scans, circa 1960's.

And if you happen to find yourself in Croton on 10/15/13, check out a great presentation at the library: OLD NEON SIGNS OF NEW YORK CITY featuring Thomas E. Rinaldi (or in the alternative you can find his book NEW YORK NEON on Amazon here http://www.amazon.com/New-York-Neon-Thomas-Rinaldi/dp/0393733416) Find out more about the November event at the Croton Friends of History website; just click on the link and scroll down the page http://www.crotonfriendsofhistory.org/

In the meantime, enjoy the scans from White Way--and this great set of retro/vintage signage from our friend Frank http://www.flickr.com/photos/41606952@N07/sets/72157633214194152/

FROM 1967, CROTON CUB SCOUT DERBY SUNDAY

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Recently a resident asked if we had anything to post regarding the old fashioned cub scout races that used to be held down at the Starlight Drive-in in the sixties. Well a friend was able to nail down the month and a year of a particular race--and ta-da: we did find this article from 1967. Click on the scans, courtesy once again of the amazing newspaper archives at The Croton Historical Society.

ASBURY METHODIST CHURCH 1967

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

While looking for something entirely different this morning at The Croton Historical Society, we came across this quintessential 1960's item on Asbury Methodist Church. We just had to share. Click on the photos.

ONCE AGAIN, YOU JUST CAN'T STOP THE CROTON VILLAGE GARDEN CLUB!

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

If the newly resurrected Croton Village Garden Club teaches us anything, it's that it's not enough to simply throw some plants in the ground and run. Maintenance is key! And so once again, the club has turned its hand to another neglected spot in Harmon, the front of the median strip on Benedict on North Riverside--weeding must have been epic! New mulch, trimming, and perfectly arranged flowering plants--a beautiful job; click on the photos--which do not do the entire scene justice. Kudos to the volunteers...again!

EVERYTHING CROTON'S TOP DOG OF THE MONTH FOR JULY 2013: HUDSON

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

If 2012 was all about Croton's cutest dogs (see the winners and all the nominees at the link below http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2012/12/and-winner-iseverythingcrotons-cute-dog.html), 2013 is going to be all about CROTON’S “TOP DOG” OF THE MONTH—a chance to showcase the bigger, beefier, beautiful, handsome and older village dogs.

Meet Hudson, Everything Croton's Top Dog of the Month for July. Hudson is a very large standard poodle of incredible calm and sweetness, handsome and with nary a mean bone in his body. Click on the photo.
