The Chronicle's editor gives his perspective as a Vietnam era veteran and participant.

On Thursday, November 6, the students, teachers, and staff at the Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School held what in recent years has become an annual tradition: A Veterans Day Celebration to which local vets are invited, served a sumptuous breakfast, serenaded by students from each grade in turn, and then escorted to various classrooms in the school to talk to students, and—if they feel like it—to tell something about their military service.
