Just finished watching Gary Cooper's The Westerner, one of Cooper's silliest and most contrived, climaxing with a shootout with Judge Roy Bean (Walter Brennan) at a Lily Langtry performance. Folks who think Roy Rogers was too "shallow" are only remembering the best of the previous generation's westerns. Though when I used to watch Roy Rogers on television, I could never figure out why everybody on the ranch had horses and wagons, but Pat Brady had a jeep. If there were jeeps, wouldn't there have been pickup trucks, too?
