CORNELIA COTTON ETAL, CROTON DAM & AQUEDUCT 175TH ANIVERSARY CELEBRATION

News Release: Update on Croton Dam and Aqueduct 175th Anniversary Celebration

Contacts: Bob Giordano, 914-874-4347; Tom McLoughlin, 914,245-7294; or Bob Waterhouse

Yorktown, NY – August 27, 2017--Plans for Croton Dam and Aqueduct 175th Anniversary Celebration--Most people today take our drinking water for granted. However, that was not the case for the residents and elected officials of New York City in the early 1700’s. The politicians were on a mission to find “pure and wholesome water” for the city of New York. Elected officials, commissioners, and engineers considered streams, brooks, rivers, marshes, wells, and lakes in three states. They also examined the cost involved.

In 1831, New York City – upon the recommendation of its engineers and commissioners – believed that the Croton River Valley would provide the consistent “pure and whole water supply” required.  New York City approved the building of the Croton Dam and Aqueduct – measuring 41 miles from the Old Croton Dam to the Central Park Reservoir.  It is now time to celebrate the 175th year of this major accomplishment with a series of presentations and a ceremony at the site of the original dam.

The Croton Dam Celebration Committee would like to confirm that there will be four presentations, hosted by Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown, prior to the Croton Dam and Aqueduct 175th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, October 8 at 3:00.  The ceremony will take place at the Old Croton Dam/Gatehouse in Yorktown, followed by a reception at Hilltop Hanover Farm.

On Saturday, September 9 at 1:00 PM (future presentations will be at 12:00), the first of four programs will be offered. Historian Bob Giordano’s “Conceived and Achieved: The Croton Dam and Aqueduct 1774-1848” talk begins the afternoon’s agenda. After a short break, Bob Waterhouse, former district supervisor at the NYC DEP will address the topic “Building of the Croton Water System.” After a question and answer session, refreshments will be served. A  $10 donation per presentation to benefit Hilltop Hanover Farm’s environmental and agricultural programs for children will be suggested.

The remaining presentations in September on Sept. 16, Sept. 23, and Sept. 30 will begin at 12:00 at Hilltop Hanover Farm.  The speakers will include Cornelia Cotton on Sept. 23. Others are being confirmed at press time. Refreshments, provided by the Yorktown Small Business Association, will be available at each talk and at the ceremony – all held at Hilltop Hanover Farm.

The actual ceremony will take place on Sunday, October 8 at 3:00 PM. Local and state officials, as well as local residents are invited to the Old Croton Dam/Gatehouse in Yorktown for this event.  State Senator Terrence Murphy and County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz have already indicated that they will be attending. Speakers will include historian Robert Giordano and former DEP official Robert Waterhouse.  Bronze plaques removed from the Croton Dam in the 1950’s will be honored during the ceremony. Following the ceremony all are invited to attend a reception at Hilltop Hanover Farm. Reservations at Hilltop Hanover Farm will be required, and the suggested donation is $25.

REMEMBERING VERA-ELLEN

Who died this date in 1981...

Blonde, slim Vera-Ellen (1921-1981) was one of the most vivacious and vibrant musical film talents to glide through Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s. Whether performing solo or dueting with the best male partners of her generation, including Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor, Vera-Ellen gave life to some of the most extraordinary dance routines ever caught on film. She was a dance sensation in a string of light-hearted but successful films. Vera-Ellen retired from acting in the late 1950s.

OUTHOUSE LETTER TO THE EDITOR: BORGIA CALLING ASTORINO A NAZI IS A NEW LOW

The following letter appears in The Daily Voice from candidate for county legislator Robert J. Outhouse (Bob). He is a lifelong Town of Cortlandt resident with a decades-long history serving his community – 23 years as a County Police Officer/ Detective and 38 years as volunteer firefighter and EMT in Cortlandt and Croton EMS.  The letter is as follows:

Westchester County Legislator Catherine Borgia calling County Executive Rob Astorino a “Nazi” is a new low for her. It’s also wrong on so many levels.

First, Rob Astorino is a good, decent and honorable man. Only a hyper-partisan would call Rob such a vile name but sadly, that’s who Catherine Borgia is.

Second, we get enough of the toxic political discourse nationally, unfortunately. For Ms. Borgia to infuse such hatred and ugliness into Westchester’s politics is shameful. We deserve better.

And lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the trivialization of the word “Nazi” is an affront to the large Jewish population who live in Westchester. On August 6, the Illescas family suffered the tragic loss of their beloved daughter and sister, Erica.  Friends of the Illescas family have set up this account to help with the costs associated with the funeral expenses, including transporting Erica home from Panama, where she had been working on an internship.  Although it will certainly not ease their pain, we hope that these donations will ease the financial hardship.  All donations are greatly appreciated.  We know that the Illescas family are humbled by the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. https://www.gofundme.com/erica-illescas-family-support

Courtesy of our friends at European Film Star Postcards---a Jerry Lewis Tribute....

Legendary American comedian, actor and director Jerry Lewis, who died this week at 91, scored in just about every branch of show business: nightclubs, radio, television, concerts, films and records. Lewis rose to fame in a comedy duo with Dean Martin, and his slapstick humour carried him through decades of film, television, stage and radio shows. Jerry was most popular in Europe, especially in France. Read and see more here http://filmstarpostcards.blogspot.com/2017/08/jerry-lewis-1926-2017.html

REMEMBERING LOUIS PRIMA

Who died this date in 1978...Louis Prima (nĂ© Louis Leo Prima; 7 December 1910 – 24 August 1978) was an Italian-American singer, actor, songwriter, bandleader, and trumpeter. While rooted in New Orleans jazz, swing music, and jump blues, Prima touched on various genres throughout his career: he formed a seven-piece New Orleans-style jazz band in the late 1920s, fronted a swing combo in the 1930s and a big band group in the 1940s, helped to popularize jump blues in the late 1940s and early to mid 1950s, and performed as a Vegas lounge act in the late 1950s and 1960s. Q: We moved here and are disappointed there isn't more for children in the way of free entertainment or stores for children and healthy eating options. What are the plans that village government has to improve this?

A: Wow. Sorry you are disappointed. You've moved to Croton-on-Hudson, a small village that was recently cited as one of the safest communities in NYS (read more courtesy of Croton United here http://tiny.cc/h9ucmy) and with one of the finest area school districts (croton-harmonschools.org)  It appears, however, that these things did not factor into your decision to move here.

But I digress..."Village government" consistently provides much in the way of "free entertainment" for children, as does the Croton Library--year round.  Croton is also home to numerous parks and playgrounds. (Please consult the village and library websites for additional information.)

Croton has had "stores for children"---clothing, toys, hobby--all have failed in recent years. Among the reasons cited by the owners of these stores were a lack of community support, online shopping etc. That being said, you are certainly "free" to open the kind of businesses you believe will succeed here.

As for "healthy" eating options, we have been down this road before. Read more here http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2017/05/from-everything-croton-mailbox.html

And if all this isn't enough to quell your "disappointment":  Here's a wrap up of Croton's businesses that made BEST OF WESTCHESTER 2017/Westchester Magazine, courtesy of Croton United https://www.facebook.com/crotonunited/photos/a.315869625236742.1073741828.315297801960591/819258358231197/?type=3&fref=mentions

COMMUNITY LEADERS CONDEMN BORGIA, CALL FOR GREATER CIVILITY IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Community Leaders rally in support of Rob Astorino and condemn Legislator Borgia for calling Astorino a "Nazi" following his veto of the "Sanctuary County" bill. Astorino calls for greater civility in political discourse https://www.facebook.com/RobAstorino/videos/1171398359660505/

LEG. BORGIA EXPRESSES "REGRET" OVER LIKENING ASTORINO'S IMMIGRATION STANCE TO "CLEVER NAZIS"

LOHUD, story developing: Catherine Borgia, the Democratic majority leader of the Westchester County Legislature, has expressed "regret" for comparing County Executive Rob Astorino’s stance on an immigration bill to the Nazis.

Astorino, a Republican, vetoed a bill last week that would’ve offered protections to undocumented immigrants. Borgia, an Ossining legislator who sponsored the “Immigrant Protection Act,” took issue with Astorino calling the proposal a “Sanctuary county law.”

"It's the classic 'Big Lie' technique," Borgia wrote in Aug. 17 email viewed by The Journal News/lohud. "All clever Nazis use it." READ MORE HERE http://www.lohud.com/story/news/politics/2017/08/23/borgia-nazi-comment/592830001/
