COMMUNITY LEADERS CONDEMN BORGIA, CALL FOR GREATER CIVILITY IN POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Community Leaders rally in support of Rob Astorino and condemn Legislator Borgia for calling Astorino a "Nazi" following his veto of the "Sanctuary County" bill. Astorino calls for greater civility in political discourse https://www.facebook.com/RobAstorino/videos/1171398359660505/

LEG. BORGIA EXPRESSES "REGRET" OVER LIKENING ASTORINO'S IMMIGRATION STANCE TO "CLEVER NAZIS"

LOHUD, story developing: Catherine Borgia, the Democratic majority leader of the Westchester County Legislature, has expressed "regret" for comparing County Executive Rob Astorino’s stance on an immigration bill to the Nazis.

Astorino, a Republican, vetoed a bill last week that would’ve offered protections to undocumented immigrants. Borgia, an Ossining legislator who sponsored the “Immigrant Protection Act,” took issue with Astorino calling the proposal a “Sanctuary county law.”

"It's the classic 'Big Lie' technique," Borgia wrote in Aug. 17 email viewed by The Journal News/lohud. "All clever Nazis use it." READ MORE HERE http://www.lohud.com/story/news/politics/2017/08/23/borgia-nazi-comment/592830001/

LoHud: Excerpts only.  As always, please read the article in its ENTIRETY.

BANNING PLASTIC BAGS

A reader writes: Why hasn't the village done more to address the issue of plastic bags? They should be banned and if not banned, then greater efforts to recycle them should be undertaken by our officials. This has been done in numerous countries worldwide...

Your editor: Croton is not a country. It's a village...and one with active county plastic bag recycling programs already in place. For example: as part of their “GreenTeam” efforts, CVS Pharmacy has been accepting plastic bags for recycling, and the popularity of the program in Croton has led CVS to add additional bins. You can read more here http://bit.ly/2sP0bFw

Shoprite also accepts bags for recycling as does other large grocery and retail  establishments.

AND NOW...MORE EVENING FREE PARKING IN UPPER VILLAGE

Courtesy of the Croton United FB page: The popularity of the dining options in the Upper Village has caused some changes designed to increase the spots available for evening customers.

The middle section of the Vassallo (Merwyn Oak) lot will now be free parking after 6pm on weekdays and free 2 hour parking all day Saturday. Because there is less need for employee parking after 6, there shoul
d still be sufficient spaces for holders of employee permits.

Mayor Schmidt is glad that the change is necessary: “We were getting feedback that there were not enough public spaces since more people are coming to eat in the evening. READ MORE HERE http://bit.ly/2wuo5qD

CORNucopia POPS UP LABOR DAY WEEKEND AND CROTON'S BLUE PIG WILL BE THERE

MEDIA ALERT-CORNucopia Pops Up at Philipsburg Manor Labor Day Weekend

SLEEPY HOLLOW, NY (Aug. 18, 2017) — A sweet way to send off summer, CORNucopia returns to Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow this Labor Day weekend. Families looking for the perfect way to wrap a summer of fun can check out the crafts, live music, and tasty treats at this celebration of all things corny. The event takes place Saturday through Monday, Sept. 2-4, from 10am-5pm each day.

Kids can get hands-on with activities like crafting cornhusk brooms, making their own butter, and designing scarecrows. They’ll race to the finish in the child-sized “mini maize maze” and the corn-shucking contest, and test their skills in a variety of corn-themed games. Live bluegrass and folk music by the Tappan Cowboys entertains visitors throughout the day. Revelers fond of two-stepping can put their best foot forward during the barn dances with the help of a caller. A juggler performs a-maize-ing feats with ears of corn and more.

Food selections available for purchase include fresh roasted corn, veggie corn burgers, corn tortilla casserole, cornbread, corn muffins, kettle corn, and popcorn, plus draft beers and draft root beer from Captain Lawrence Brewery. Blue Pig of Croton-on-Hudson will feature sweet corn ice cream.

Online tickets sold in advance are $16 for adults; $12 for seniors; $8 for children 3-17; and free for children under 3 and for Historic Hudson Valley members. Tickets are available online at www.hudsonvalley.org. They are $2 more when purchased on site.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM MAYOR SCHMIDT

Recent events in Charlottesville have caused pain and tragedy in our nation and in our community.

It was an organized group of racists who marched and murdered, and that is one of the most troubling aspects.

But organized bigotry and hate can be prevented, and that starts by recognizing that we are one community of Americans.

We can focus less on that which makes us different from each other and rather we can recall that which we have in common, for it is that commonality which unites us.

Hatred has always been within us. But we must not forget that love is also within us. If we as a community are to appeal to the better angels of our nature, then we as individuals must act on our nobler instincts.

To blame a politician or a mob for our decisions is to ignore the free will which we each possess. And in the exercise of that free will, we should not forget that we each on a daily basis struggle with the flaws in ourselves.

I have just been reading Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address. Written during the depths of national discord, the speech remains one of the greatest ever written.   Read more here http://bit.ly/2uVQ4Me

MAYOR SCHMIDT ALERT TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS REGARDING COUNTERFEIT ECLIPSE GLASSES

A word from Mayor Schmidt: “The solar eclipse on Monday is an experience for the whole family. Although only a partial eclipse will be visible here in Croton, it is an opportunity to have some fun while learning about astronomy, physics, and history.

“Please remind your children that looking directly at an eclipse, or looking thru a telescope or binoculars, can permanently damage their eyesight. Either a pinhole camera or special sunglasses made to be used for viewing an eclipse are necessary.  READ MORE HERE http://bit.ly/2fP3bfD

Q: Any word on the "Nappy" property (it's on Benedict) and what's going on with that eyesore? The fence came down and then back up a week ago.

A: AS OF APRIL 2017--it was announced at a previous board meeting that the current (still???) owner had abandoned plans to develop it because he saw no way to make the building profitable even with far more apartments allocated than the re-zoning originally claimed for the site. It allegedly remains on the market in its current state. As always you should direct your questions to proponents of the re-zoning, and/or consult the planning board records, check the village's meeting minutes, etc.

PHOTO ALBUM - DISCOVERING CROTON’S HIDDEN TREASURE: THE CROTON ARBORETUM

Courtesy of the Croton United FB page--an outstanding and extensive photo album...DISCOVERING CROTON’S HIDDEN TREASURE: THE CROTON ARBORETUM

The crown jewel of the Croton parks is the Croton Arboretum.  Named in honor of Jayne Lytle, the 20 acre preserve has been maintained by neighborhood volunteers since being donated to the Village in 1991.

Deputy Mayor Bob Anderson serves as Trustee Liaison to the Village Parks Committee, and is a frequent visitor. “The Arboretum exists because of the dedication of several generations of current and former Croton residents” he says. “Current chair Karen Jescavage Bernard continues the tradition of leadership, and the donations made to the not-for-profit Croton Arboretum and Sanctuary enable preservation of these wetlands.”  READ AND SEE MUCH MORE HERE https://www.facebook.com/crotonunited/posts/845763922247307
