CUOMO IS IN NO POSITION TO BRAG ABOUT NY'S VIRUS RESPONSE - Gov. Cuomo is spiking the football, dunking the basketball, and dashing around the soccer field taking off his shirt. He’s spraying champagne all over Albany. He’s Muhammad Ali standing over the crumpled form of Sonny Liston in 1965: Boom, take that, coronavirus. Woo-hoo! Victory!

Only 31,000 deaths. New York suffered through the equivalent of 9/11 times 11 but . . . yay?

“You played politics with this virus and you lost,” Cuomo said in an interview Thursday, referring to Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis, with whom Cuomo is engaging in a bizarre feud to rival his utterly nonsensical ongoing war with fellow liberal Democrat Mayor de Blasio.

“It’s now undeniable this country paid a terrible price,” Cuomo continued, suggesting . . . what? That other states lacked the sage wisdom of Andrew Cuomo, slayer of the coronavirus? Thirty-one thousand New York families would like a word.

It rather looks like COVID-19 won. If any entity deserves to brag, it’s Satan’s cupcake, with 31,000 graves to dance on. And if DeSantis, as Cuomo claims, “lost,” the scoreboard doesn’t reflect it. Florida has a larger population than New York state but has registered fewer than one-third as many coronavirus cases. Florida has seen 15 COVID-19 fatalities per 100,000 population; New York, 160. With 46,000 deaths between them, New York and its sibling New Jersey have combined for more fatalities than France, Spain and Italy. Years ago I was dedicating a new parish to St. Peter. A woman wrote to protest: “Why would you name a Church after such a coward, a sinner who denied even knowing the Lord when Jesus needed him most, at the hour of His arrest and crucifixion?”

Knowing her and what parish she was from, I wrote back, “But you’re a proud parishioner at St. Mary Magdalene Church. She was sure not a paragon of virtue for a chunk of her life. Yet, by God’s grace, she became a radiant, inspirational saint. If we can’t name churches after sinners, the only titles we’d have left would be Jesus and His Mother!”

Isn’t the same true of America’s historical personalities? All of them had flaws, yet all of them still contributed a lot of good to our nation’s progress.

Defacing, tearing down and hiding statues and portraits is today’s version of Puritan book-burning. Our children need to know their country’s past, its normative figures and their virtues and vices. That’s how we learn and pass on our story. Is there any more effective way to comprehend America’s history of racism than reading “Huckleberry Finn” or one of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories, works of literature now ominously on the chopping block?

Cuomo’s Covid Chutzpah - Texas and Florida have a long way to go to match New York’s virus record.

As for chutzpah, the prize goes to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who reveled in the misery of others on Friday: “Oh, I say to them all, look at the numbers. You played politics with this virus and you lost. You told the people of your state and you told the people of this country, White House, ‘Don’t worry about it. Just open up, go about your business, this is all Democratic hyperbole.’ Oh, really? Now you see 27 states with the numbers going up. You see the death projections going up.”

To reinforce his thumb in the eye, Mr. Cuomo declared that travelers to New York from Utah, Arizona, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida will need to quarantine for 14 days. ......This will be difficult to enforce, but Mr. Cuomo said New York police may pull over cars with out-of-state licenses.

This comes with ill-grace from the man whose state still has by far the most virus infections and deaths. He’s also contradicting his own statements from earlier in the pandemic. When Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo in March had police stop cars with New York license plates, Mr. Cuomo threatened to sue and tweeted, “We will not let New Yorkers be discriminated against.” Now he’s discriminating against other states, and notice that just one of his eight target states is run by a Democrat.

Mr. Cuomo is responsible for the single worst public-policy mistake of this pandemic: His administration’s order requiring nursing homes to accept Covid-19 patients from hospitals. That bad judgment let the virus rampage through institutions with the most vulnerable populations. Florida has some 4,000 homes for assisted senior living but locked down those facilities and it tests every worker at those institutions every two weeks.

None of the new state flare-ups come close to the severity of New York’s. New York state’s average positivity test rate exceeded 30% in late March and peaked above 50% in early April. Deaths are a lagging indicator, but New York had more than 900 fatalities a day at the peak. Andrew Cuomo’s coronavirus response — now that the Empire State is “considering” imposing a quarantine on visitors from the Sunshine State. “I would just ask if that’s done just please do not quarantine any Floridians in the nursing homes in New York,” DeSantis quipped Saturday at a press conference in Tallahassee when asked about the potential travel restrictions. Cuomo has faced criticism for virus-related deaths among the elderly population after health officials ordered nursing homes and rehabilitation centers admit to COVID-19 patients being discharged from hospitals. What is 2 plus 2? That depends on whether you live in Croton, where creativity is a hallmark of our budgeting process.

That creativity only goes in one direction: to grossly understate the cost of a project. We have seen this for years, but recent examples include the Croton Point Avenue cost overrun, the disappearance of the Gouveia “perpetual” endowment, and the ballooning cost of the DPW building.

There are various reasons for these continuous budget surprises, including lack of foresight and wishful thinking. But sometimes the math is deliberately misleading from the outset. READ MORE HERE.

Protesters In DC Claim Whole Foods Is Racist, Call For It To Be Shut Down--A group of protesters surrounded a Whole Foods in Washington, D.C. on Thursday night, accusing it of “[gentrifying] black and brown communities,” according to Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) reporters covering the protests. A VICTORY FOR NEW YORK CHURCHES ETAL. - NY JUDGE BLOCKS CUOMO FROM ENFORCING COVID-19 RESTRUCTION ON RELIGIOUS GATHERINGS... PROTESTS OK, WORSHIP IS NOT? JUDGE SAYS NO!

NY DAILY NEWS - N.Y. judge blocks Cuomo from enforcing COVID-19 restrictions on religious gatherings---Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio favored protest over prayer when imposing coronavirus restrictions, a New York judge ruled Friday, blocking the pols from treating houses of worship differently than businesses.

Albany Federal Court Judge Gary Sharpe wrote that de Blasio and Cuomo cannot encourage thousands of people to take to the streets to protest racial injustice while also restricting outdoor religious gatherings.

“Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio could have just as easily discouraged protests, short of condemning their message, in the name of public health and exercised discretion to suspend enforcement for public safety reasons instead of encouraging what they knew was a flagrant disregard of the outdoor limits and social distancing rules. They could have also been silent. But by acting as they did, Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio sent a clear message that mass protests are deserving of preferential treatment,” the judge wrote.

De Blasio, the judge noted, had “simultaneous pro-protest/anti-religious gathering messages” that undermined the city’s legal arguments. Cuomo similarly “applauded and encouraged protesting and discouraged others from violating the outdoor limitations.”  READ MORE AT  THE NY DAILY NEWS HERE.
