THANK YOU FROM THE CROTON YACHT CLUB, RIVER DAY 2017

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

THANK YOU FROM THE CROTON YACHT CLUB, HUDSON RIVER DAY 2017, DENNIS KOONEY, DIRECTOR

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Croton Yacht Club membership, and all others, who participated in the preparation and execution of the most successful Hudson River Day to date. I would also like to thank the community for supporting this important event.

In spite of the Elliott Way construction and competing events such as the Town of Cortlandt “Family Fun Day”, we realized the best attendance since its inception nine years ago. The model of providing a full educational and interactive experience centering around the history and ecology of the river coupled with our partnership with the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association (HRFA) has evolved into the most unique and successful event of its kind, on the river.

Thanks to the HRFA, the youth fishing contest was again a home run. 55 children registered and participated in the event throughout the day, with 22 fish caught and entered. Some species caught and released included white catfish, channel catfish, white perch, striped bass and blue fish, and also a blue claw crab. First place was awarded to Gabriel Camillieri with a 21 ¾” catfish, second place was an 18- inch catfish caught by Andrew Callaghan and in third place was a 15 ½” catfish caught by Luca Camillieri. More than 30 fishing rod and reel combinations were awarded throughout the day to participants, which were donated by both the HRFA and the Croton Yacht Club. The happiness and excitement of those receiving awards were dwarfed by those children who caught the first fish of their lifetime.

The food was outstanding, and the chowder pot was drained to the last drop. All exhibits and exhibitors were engaging, especially the crafts for the children. Chris Letts captivated the audience at the “touching table” where the children could see, touch and smell some of the river’s fish species. Our viewing tanks provided a unique look into the underwater world of the river. Presentations by Scott Craven and Bob and Mary Ann Booth were engaging and informative. Thank you to Croton Police Department Officers who exhibited the Village Police Boat and to members of “Ferry Sloops” for providing a free sailing experience on a picture-perfect day. Finally, for the first time in seven years, the “River Dog” competition, initiated and organized by Brigid Faranda, was a tie. The two winning dogs were Aslan a male white Siberian Husky and Sadie Burns a Golden Retriever.

As Croton Yacht Club members, we take pride in providing this experience to the community. As parents and grandparents, we take comfort in knowing our children and grandchildren are being afforded an opportunity to make a life changing connection to the river we all love.

EASTWARD AGAIN WITH ROB AND MONICA & UNCLE BOBBY'S HOUSE

MONDAY 9/18/17 - Eastward Again!

The third weekend in September would mark a return to Uncle Bobby's house where the cleaning continues. We hadn't been out there for a few weeks and there is much work that still needs to be done. The timetable for its completion is more blurred than ever. The original goal had been to have it all cleaned out by October, run a couple of estate sales and then wait for the property to be sold. There now seems to be, amongst the group of heirs, that the push to sell the house may not be made until 2018 and that at least one estate sale might be delayed until next year. Whatever the timetable becomes, the house still needs to be cleaned out. We would move a little closer to that goal On Saturday.

HOLY NAME OF MARY - BASKETS NEEDED FOR CHRISTMAS FAIR TRADE COFFEE GIFTS 2017

HOLY NAME OF MARY - BASKETS NEEDED FOR CHRISTMAS FAIR TRADE COFFEE GIFTS - As in recent years, we plan to sell Fair Trade coffee and snacks in baskets, wrapped for you to give as Christmas gifts. We are asking parishioners for baskets of all sizes and shapes, to be left in the small, stairwell room beside the Parish Secretary’s Office by October 15. This will allow us time to wash and prepare gifts to be ready for December sales. Thanks so much. Mary Lally 914-271-5628 for the Fair Trade Coffee Ministry.

Yes indeed. There CAN BE TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING--check out this Christmas ad for Mom and daughter look-alike dresses--from Sears 1959. Your editor is now the proud owner of this catalog, courtesy of the Peekskill Attic Treasures Flea Market (open on Sundays, nine-ish to four-ish but only while the weather permits) and while a lot of pages are missing, you'll be seeing more of it from time to time.

And here's something from one side of the spectrum to the other--an oldie but goodie--check out this 1932 ad for Rain starring Joan Crawford. Crawford played prostitute Sadie Thompson; Walter Huston was the conflicted missionary. You can read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_%281932_film%29

It's followed by one of our favorite Halloween putz houses by Howard Lamey. Click on the photos.

We love the old tinplate toys (many of which would never pass the "safety" test these days with their sharp edges and corners--how did we ever survive, lol). Then we started thinking about BIG INDOOR TRAINS TRIBUTE TO TINPLATE--a'la houses and such; there are some really great "easy street scene projects" here and much more.

TROPICAL STORM WATCH IN EFFECT, NEWS 12

NEWS 12 - A tropical storm watch has been issued for southern Westchester County as Hurricane Jose churns north through the Atlantic Ocean.  News 12 meteorologists say Jose's impacts could be felt locally on Tuesday, with windy and rainy conditions, rough surf at beaches, and possible flooding in low-lying areas. The storm's exact track will directly affect any potential local impacts -- if the storm takes a more easterly track, the chance for rain will decrease, so stay with News 12 for the the latest. An oldie but goodie -- there are some old photos that really speak to you; the beautiful Victorian woman to the right is one of them--and was so meant to be shared. She's followed by something completely different: a 1922 ad for the Daisy Air Rifle.

We also learned that Daisy Outdoor Products (known primarily as Daisy) was formed in 1888 to manufacture windmills. As a sales promotion, they started providing air guns with the purchase of each windmill--they were so popular, they began offering them for sale and the rest is history! SERVICES & OBITUARY FOR STANLEY "JACK" PEZANOWSKI

Stanley "Jack" Pezanowski-Mr. Pez- passed away on September 14th, just shy of his 90th birthday. He was born at home on Mt. Airy to George and Alexandra Pezanowski on October 28, 1927. He was a lifelong resident of Croton-on-Hudson, leaving only to serve in the Navy in Hawaii during WWII. Jack owned and operated his own roofing and siding company for over 40 years and he was highly regarded for both his skills and his generous nature, always helping those who needed a hand. He was also a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 137 and worked on many building projects in the NY area.

Jack was best known and loved for his sense of humor and his harmless pranks which kept his friends and family laughing until his final days. The party up in Heaven is certainly merrier now with Jack as a guest. He read the newspaper every day and he enjoyed watching NY Giants and Ohio State football games as well as the Yankees. The most important thing in Jack's life was his family. He leaves behind the love of his life, Dodie (Dymes) Pezanowski; beloved children Elaine (Jim) Loft; Kevin (Beth) Pezanowski; Karen (Sean) Higman; and cherished grandchildren Gretchen and Hallie Loft; Abigail and Leah Pezanowski; Ryan (Claire), Matt (Samantha) and Caitie Higman, as well as his dear nephew Bob (Liz) Pezanowski and his neighbor and friend Eric Bishop, who has helped him so much over the years. He was predeceased by his parents, his twin sister Helen, sister Henrietta and his brothers Alex, George, Stephen and Joseph.

Visitation will be on Monday, September 18, 2017 from 2-4 & 7-9pm at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand St. in Croton. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 19th at 10AM Holy Name of Mary Church also in Croton followed by private interment. REMEMBERING REXALL DRUGS

Oh how we loved the local Rexall Drug Store in our old neighborhood in the Bronx; it had a soda fountain counter for cherry lime rickeys and chocolate egg creams--some of us even had our first job there--and it was always the scene of much activity at Christmas time, a place where you could buy nice modestly-priced name brand things--we got our first Timex watch there--and hey do you remember...flash bulbs...

And Rexall's well-known "Shelf Elf" promotional campaign always promised bargains during the holidays.

Here's a two page Christmas advertisement below from 1965--click on the photos.  It features popular items at the time--including the ubiquitous G.E. clock radio(!)---and Shiny Brite Christmas Ornaments.
