KEEP CALM & CARRY ON: THE 2017 CROTON ROTARY CAR SHOW IS...

For those who've asked: THE 2017 CROTON ROTARY CLUB COLLECTIBLE CAR SHOW (AND CHILI COOK-OFF) is scheduled for September 24th.  As always, it will be held in the parking lot at the Croton-Harmon train station--there will be more details later on.

MORE ON CROTON EAGLE SCOUT DANIEL PARKER, VIA LOHUD

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

CROTON EAGLE SCOUT USES HIS EARS TO CREATE GARDEN MADE FOR BIRDS...LOHUD

CROTON-ON-HUDSON - A summer day finds Daniel Parker spotting seemingly every bird around — by their songs. “That’s a cardinal,” said Parker, 18, who was born blind. On cue, the red bird serenades again. “That one," he added, "right there."

Parker, of Croton-on-Hudson, stands in Croton Point Park near the Hudson River by his Eagle Scout project: A garden that’s something of a bird magnet. The recent Croton-Harmon High School graduate, who recognizes perhaps hundreds of migratory and nesting birds’ sounds, surveyed the birds in an area of the park last year and researched which native plants would draw them for rest, food and to breed. MORE FROM THE EVERYTHING CROTON MAILBOX, AUGUST 1970'S

Q: We lived in Croton from 1969 and left in August 1979 but return to visit family in the area often. We love how beautiful the village looks and can't believe how many flags there are everywhere, just like the old days, and that the diner is still there. We're so happy to see Holy Name of Mary is doing well too.  Anyways, I went away to camp every July but August in Croton meant freedom to do almost anything I wanted. Speaking of this time, do you have anything for August in the 1970's?

ANOTHER THREE DAY WEEKEND 7/18/17 - We are still behind a few weeks on our blog but we will be caught up soon!

The third weekend of June found us with a three day weekend for the second week in a row. It would be our last Friday off for a month. We both get four weeks vacation and try to take at least one three-day weekend a month. HUD CAPITULATES: STATEMENT FROM COUNTY EXEC. ASTORINO

HUD Capitulates - Westchester's Zoning Is Not Exclusionary - July 18, 2017- After seven years, the most contentious element of Westchester’s affordable housing settlement with the federal government has been resolved favorably for the county. The Department of Housing and Urban Development has accepted Westchester’s analysis that did not find any exclusionary zoning in the county.

Resolution of the zoning issue protects home rule with respect to local land use decisions and overcomes the county’s last major hurdle under the settlement, which was signed by former County Executive Andrew Spano and approved by the Board of Legislators in 2009.

The zoning controversy stemmed from a portion of the settlement that required the county to submit a review of obstacles to fair housing, known as an Analysis of Impediments, or AI, that was acceptable to HUD. Ordinarily, preparation of an AI is routine. But not in Westchester’s case. Despite thousands of pages of objective data and two independent reviews supporting the finding of no evidence of exclusionary zoning across Westchester, HUD rejected 10 AI’s submitted by the county. HUD had taken the novel and aggressive view that routine zoning measures, such as limits on height, density…READ MORE HERE http://www3.westchestergov.com/news/7444-hud-capitulates-westchester-s-zoning-is-not-exclusionary

PART 1: BACK 2 SCHOOL, A NOSTALGIC LOOK AT SHOPPING, SCHOOLS & MORE IN CROTON 1983

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

A reader writes: I went back to school shopping, yep already, with my nephew the other day. My sister says you have to go earlier and earlier every year. Things sure have changed from when we were kids when you didn't go till the week or two before school started and usually no further than Ossining. (In our house, Peekskill was more of a Christmas shopping destination).  Now it's all computers, Staples, a lot of online stuff, really early deadlines, and a very expensive supply list. That got me to thinking how it was in the late 70's and early 80's in Croton with back to school. Got anything **back to school** from that time?

Your editor: The elves and I have been working on something...here's Part One of BACK 2 SCHOOL, A NOSTALGIC LOOK AT SHOPPING, SCHOOLS & MORE IN CROTON 1983.  Click on the images below, courtesy of the outstanding archives maintained by THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY--HERE'S THE 1983 BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLEMENT FROM THE CROTON CORTLANDT NEWS:.

MORE FROM THE EVERYTHING CROTON MAILBOX

Q: I wish this blog wouldn't focus so much on eating food that isn't good for you. If the village is ever going to move forward and attract a business like Trader Joe's we have to show them that we are willing to make a commitment to good eating.  We need officials to start setting better diet examples.

A: Wow. We've been down this road before...Normally your editor wouldn't respond to something like this but...

First Trader Joe's will never come to Croton. We don't fit the geographic, population or other demographics. They have said so. In addition, we don't get to decide what other people eat--and as for our officials setting a better "diet example"...sheesh....

In short, Croton residents don't "have" to commit to anything--and the idea that a place like Trader Joe's will only come to Croton if we make some sort of "collective" commitment to your definition of "good" food is  somewhat grandiose to put it kindly.

That beng said, there are plenty of choices for the vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and locally-sourced folks.  Or in the alternative, you can open your own business--or find another blog that appeals to your dietary lifestyle. Here however, are some links you may enjoy:
