MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR LEONARD "LEN" GOBER

A memorial service will be held at George's Island on September 27th at Pavillion #2 from 3-6 pm.

PART TWO: AN EATON'S CHRISTMAS 1920-1921

Your editor is pleased to bring you selected toy and candy scans--sliced and diced so you can appreciate all the details--from the Winter Eaton's Catalog of 1920-21--with more on the way in the coming months.

For those who don't know, Eaton's a.k.a. T. Eaton Co. Limited was once Canada's largest department store retailer. It was started in 1869 by Timothy Eaton, a Presbyterian Ulster Scot immigrant from what is known now as Northern Ireland.  Eaton's grew to become a retail and social institution in Canada, with stores across the country, buying offices around the globe, and a catalog that was found in the homes of most Canadians. Sadly, the company went bankrupt in 1999. You can read more about it here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eaton's - Click on the scans below and enjoy.  SEE PART ONE HERE http://www.everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2015/08/an-eatons-christmas-1920-21.html

TOUGHMAN, 2011 AND 2010 MAYORAL PROCLAMATIONS

Recently it's been asserted that the county and state DOT should be "blamed" for the annual Toughman competition in Croton, NOT village officials--and that those volunteers, residents from the village and the area, church-goers and others who have expressed concerns, asked questions, offered solutions, etc.--are simply too stupid to understand.

Click on the photo to read a proclamation from Mayor Wiegman in 2011 regarding this event and form your own conclusions. It comes from the village website. A 2010 proclamation is also here http://www.crotononhudson-ny.gov/public_documents/CrotonHudsonNY_WebDocs/Mayor/Toughman-Proclamation_2010_seal.pdf

IMPORTED FROM THE USA: JAYNE MANSFIELD - NEW @ EUROPEAN FILM STAR POSTCARDS

From our friends at European Film Star Postcards: IMPORTED FROM THE USA, JAYNE MANSFIELD (click on the photo).

Some Hollywood stars were much more popular in Europe than at home. A fabulous example is sweet Jayne Mansfield (1933-1967), one of Hollywood's original platinum blonde bombshells. Although most of her American films did not do much at the European box offices, Jayne herself was a sensation whenever she came to Europe to promote her films. During the 1960s when Hollywood had lost its interest in her, Jayne continued to appear cheerfully in several European films.

NEW AND EXCITING NOW! AT CROTON'S OWN SERIOUSTOYZ.COM

THE MILLSTREAM MATCHBOX ARCHIVE!

A historic find of mint in box, store stock 1950s-era Matchbox cars, directly from an unopened Bronner distributor shipment! (JUST TO BE CLEAR: the vehicles shown at the link below are available for purchase RIGHT NOW, at discounted prices!)

During the late 1950s, Mr. Lloyd Greene owned “Delta Distributors”, a regional distributor of the popular new British–made line of die cast toys, “Matchbox” cars. In early 1960, he placed his largest order ever with Fred Bronner, the sole distributor of Matchbox toys in the U.S. Between the time he placed that order, and the time it was shipped on September 2, 1960, his business’ building and property was seized by the state of Massachusetts (using “eminent domain”), for use in the newly expanding Mass. Turnpike. Finding himself without a place to do business, he decided to store the remaining inventory in an attic on another property he owned. There it stayed, safe but forgotten. PHOTOS FROM THE 2015 HISTORICAL SUNDAY @ ASBURY METHODIST'S BETHEL CHAPEL

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Asbury Methodist Church celebrated "Historical Sunday" 2015 (a.k.a. "Historic Sunday") this morning at the Bethel Chapel.

For those who don't know, the Bethel Chapel is surrounded by the historic Bethel Cemetery. The Chapel was built in the early 1790's on land donated by Phillip Van Cortlandt. Over the years the chapel has numbered among its worshipers many of the men prominent in the early history of our nation, more particularly in the founding of the Town of Cortlandt and Westchester County.

The wooden clapboard structure has not changed very much over the years and contains an organ said to be one of the oldest in the United States. Bethel Chapel and cemetery are listed on the NYS Register of Historic Places and in the National Registry.

Here are a few photos from today's event; click on the images below, all rights reserved. Copies will be sent to the church. For more info about Asbury Methodist: FB https://www.facebook.com/AsburyCrotonUMC
