CORN & PEACHES & PLUMS OH MY....AT CROTON COUNTRY GARDENS OF COURSE

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

If you haven't heard yet, Cookie's locally famous sweet corn has arrived...

You can read and see more about that here, courtesy of Croton United's FB page http://bit.ly/2uYOnRs

Today the peaches (click on the photo), nectarines and sweet yellow plums arrived--all locally sourced....and beautiful Jersey Beefsteak tomatoes too....it all goes very fast....and with good reason.

For those who don't know, this is also Cookie's last season. After well over five decades in the nursery business both in the Bronx and here in Croton, Cookie is retiring. "I've been doing this since I was a kid", Cookie said. "I love it and of course I'll miss my loyal customers, but I'm also looking forward to having more time with friends and family".

We wish Cookie the best of luck in his well-deserved retirement. In the meantime, get that corn and more while you can....

SUPPORT CONTINUES TO GROW FOR NANCE'S COFFEE

Courtesy of the Croton United FB page: With only days remaining, local political leaders rallied to save the 51 year-old coffee stand at the Croton-Harmon MTA Metro-North Railroad station.

Deputy Mayor Anderson joined other supporters of the Marafito family, including Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.

The event was covered by several media outlets, and the County Executive spoke of the value which family businesses bring to Westchester and to Croton.

HUDSON VALLEY SWEET CORN IS BACK, GET IT WHILE U CAN

Courtesy of the Croton United FB page - Deputy Mayor Bob Anderson stopped by to get some of the legendary sweet corn at Croton Country Gardens, and persuaded Cookie to reveal the secret.

LOOKING FOR "FAIR TRADE"?

A reader comments: I'm surprised there isn't much in the way of fair trade products being sold in Croton. Back in the city, we had lots of opportunities like this.

Well...to the reader...you are not in the city any more. That being said, Croton had two businesses that provided an extensive array of fair trade items here in the village as recently as a few years ago--both did not survive.  However, there are still periodic fair trade opportunities:

--THE HOLY NAME OF MARY FAIR TRADE MINISTRY: Once a month throughout the year (except in the summer) fair trade/equal exchange coffee, tea, and chocolates are sold in the Parish Center after all masses. The sales will start again in the fall. You can read the ministry's 2013-2014 report here http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-2013-2014-fair-tradeequal-exchange.html

--FAIR TRADE TOTE BASKETS FROM WEST AFRICA, available at Sunshine & Clover  https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1402199213192801&id=413739138705485

--More and more local supermarkets are offering products that are branded "fair trade" or "responsibly sourced". Be on the look-out if this is your preference.  Fair trade products are also sold periodically at other local church fairs and sales.

THE LATEST FROM CBS LOCAL ON NANCE'S COFFEE SHOP

As many of you are aware, NANCE'S COFFEE at the Croton-Harmon Train station needs your help. You can read Mayor Schmidt's letter to the MTA here http://bit.ly/2titsEe

And now from CBS Local, the latest coverage: A small mom and pop coffee shop finds itself up against the MTA, fighting to survive for a second time. The shop has been a fixture at Metro-North’s Croton-Harmon station in northern Westchester County for more than half a century, but that could soon come to a close. “My grandparents started this business 51 years ago,” the owner’s son, Sean Cohen, told CBS2’s Brian Conybeare. Cohen is fighting to save the family-run shop that his late-grandmother led despite being disabled. Q: Anything new on the Nappy property on Benedict? After all, the blanket rezoning of the area was supposed to get us all these great shops and make it easy for an owner to turn a profit. All I see now is a chain link fence and nothing happening. Also do they pay less taxes now that it is just an empty lot?

A: AS OF APRIL 2017--it was announced at a previous board meeting that the current (still???) owner had abandoned plans to develop it because he saw no way to make the building profitable. It is allegedly back on the market in its current state. As always you should direct your questions to proponents of the re-zoning, at least those who still live here, (and who also brought you the Dairy Mart construction), consult the planning board records, check the village's meeting minutes, etc. You can also read more about the site (yes, all the way to 2014) http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2014/08/nappys-has-been-sold-11-unit-3-story.html

As for your tax question, you should direct it to the Village Manager, Janine King jking@crotononhudson-ny.gov

Q: I wish we had a place in town where we can get children's books, crafting items, educational, that sort of thing. Do you know if there are any plans to open up this kind of business in town?  A hobby store would be nice.

A: Actually there are plenty of places in the village already:
