To the right, a fabulous old photo of Coney Island's Surf Avenue, circa 1913 (thanks Lisa!)--we just love the building on the right--scene of Feltman's Restaurant--Charles Feltman is generally credited with the creation of the hot dog on a bun!

It's followed by a great shot of Coney Island's Elephant Hotel, circa 1888. The 
Elephant Hotel, was a tourist attraction located on Coney Island that was built in the shape of an elephant. An example of novelty architecture, the seven-story tall structure designed by James V. Lafferty stood above Surf Avenue and West 12th Street from 1885 until 1896, when it burnt down in a fire. During its lifespan, the thirty-one room building acted as a hotel, concert hall, and amusement bazaar. -- Wikipedia

  2. We have a little example of novelty architecture right here in the town. There's a little auto repair place in Montrose shaped like an oil can.
