BY SPECIAL REQUEST, A LOOK BACK AT SWANSON'S FLORIST

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

BY SPECIAL REQUEST, A LOOK BACK AT SWANSON'S FLORIST. For decades, Croton's go-to florist and nursery for the best geraniums ever. Click on the photos, courtesy of The Croton Historical Society.

  1. Got many a corsage there and was sorry to see them close.

  2. Among the many wonderful memories of Swanson's--my husband Joel once bought a bunch of daffodils for his Pleasantville office manager. Price for daffs in Pleasantville florist: $2 each! Price for gorgeous, big home-grown daffs at Swansons: 50 cents apiece!
We were so lucky to have Swanson's in Croton.
We got beautiful impatiens and browallia for our shade garden every year--the best, and cheapest, in the area.
One disturbing memory--the elder Swanson showed me a stack of unpaid invoices. Can't understand how people could stiff a florist, especially the iconic Swansons.--Jeanette Gingold

  3. The best thing was watching Mr. Swanson cut each stem from his raised flower beds. Those flowers were FRESHLY CUT, and they lasted much longer than any others. I loved walking through the greenhouses ... such tranquility.
