God Squad Kicks Off
Its Calendar Of Social Justice With A Fall Cleaning for Croton Senior Citizens
Croton-on-Hudson,
New York (November 8, 2014) – Holy Name of Mary’s youth group, “God Squad,” raked
gardens and patios, cleaned off porches, weeded and mulched and trimmed hedges
in the process of helping our local senior citizens accomplish some of those
everyday chores that many of us take for granted as part of its“Fall Cleaning” day
of service.
God Squad was
joined by local Boy Scouts and high school volunteers that were being Confirmed
at Holy Name of Mary last weekend as part of their community service
requirement.
Holy Name of Mary
Youth Minister Carl Barnes and God Squad members launched this initiative in an
effort to “bridge the generation gap by bringing together local teens and
senior citizens to help each other understand the gifts and challenges that
each group faces.”
God Squad members
were able to meet some “real heroes” that have “already contributed so much to
our community, as our teens try to figure out their own legacy that they would
like to contribute to our town.”
Local resident
Bill Ryder commended the Croton teen’s efforts by saying, “ This is a great
thing that you are doing for your neighbors – something that you should make you
all very proud.”
God Squad member
Caroline Barnesshared that she thought the
experience was “very therapeutic, reflective and a great way to get outdoors
while doing something nice for someone else...it also bridged together the gap
between our generation and the senior citizens...they were all so appreciative
of our work and we were just as happy and willing to give them an extra hand,
especially on such a beautiful day. It made my Saturday
and my weekend!”
God Squad’s
calendar of Social Justice work continues this Fall with its annual Blessing of
the CYO Athletes that will be celebrated at a 10:45am Youth Mass this Sunday,
November 16th at Holy Name of Mary.
The action continues with their annual Homeless Awareness Sleepout on
December 6-7th. Local teens
will collect food for CHOP’s (Caring for the Homeless of Peekskill) Fred’s Food
Pantry, cash donations for CHOP’s Jan Peek House and men’s and women’s clothing
for Holy Name’s “Midnight Run” ministry.
Youth minister Carl Barnes “welcomes anyone that wants to contribute or
participate in any of these upcoming events.”

Hopefully one of these great kids will grow up to one day run for office here in the village, and restore the meaning of "public service". Lord knows our current officials haven't a clue. God bless you all, God bless the God Squad and thank you EverythingCroton for your coverage of all our houses of worship and their active groups. Mary
